        1. Wswplz says:

Let’s hope he is correct this year!

        2. Wswplz says:

Well I should qualify my statement , or blue would be fine with me as far as Michigan schools. I would like to see my former school do well however the odds aren’t good a mountain west school is going to deep.

      2. Rocky (Rockford) says:

        WOW?

  2. Larry of Hastings, barry co says:

    Go Blue

    1. Nathan (Forest Hills) says:

Go green! I can’t wait for the warmth so we can see the grass

      1. Larry of Hastings, barry co says:

        I love KY blue grass.

        1. Nathan (Forest Hills) says:

Lol, I see. I prefer the beautiful, green, strong, Michigan green grass though.

        2. Bobby (Ada) says:

Most Grass in Michigan is Bluegrass, mixed with Ryegrass. Also one of the most durable types of grass that can withstand our harsh winters.

        3. Nathan (Forest Hills) says:

I meant the actual color. The grass in my neighborhood is bluegrass but it looks green.

        4. Bobby (Ada) says:

Sorry Nathan! :) I really like Bermuda but it doesn’t hold up too well around here lol

        5. Nathan (Forest Hills) says:

          Haha Im not actually serious

Sure Sign of Spring Male Red Winged Blackbird at My Feeders Today !!!!
    © vidular

One of the most abundant birds across North America, and one of the most boldly colored, the Red-winged Blackbird is a familiar sight atop cattails, along soggy roadsides, and on telephone wires. Glossy-black males have scarlet-and-yellow shoulder patches they can puff up or hide depending on how confident they feel. Females are a subdued, streaky brown, almost like a large, dark sparrow. In the North, their early arrival and tumbling song are happy indications of the return of spring.

    1. Larry of Hastings, barry co says:

I started seeing them on Monday.

  4. Dan says:

Cannot believe Dayton pulled the upset on the Buckeyes. Yes, I can. Buckeyes haven’t been playing well. Harvard and Tommy Amaker looking to upset Cincy!
    YES, Go BLUE against Wofford!

7-11″ inches of snow in around 2 weeks, if we get a decent storm it may happen, but for those who still want snow let’s hope these maps verify because it’s been a long long time since they have. So what’s the RDB say to this Rocky?

      1. Mark (East Lansing) says:

Yeah, but they’re nice to look at.

        1. Wswplz says:

Yes , but these aren’t as colorful as some of the others, like weather caster has some aesthetically pleasing snow maps, if only they were to come true one day. Lol

    2. SW Kent says:

      You called it Rocky!
      Snow and cold thru March.
      Excellent winter sport conditions.
      How did you know?

      1. Rocky (Rockford) says:

When you’re good you’re good! ROCK n ROll will never die baby!

        1. Tim from Zeeland says:

March has not been that snowy at all. Rocky screams about more snow and cold, but the snow for the most part has been a bust for March. Say Rocky, you missed that one. Sorry for you, you have to go to school tomorrow.

  6. Mark (East Lansing) says:

    PAYNE

    1. SW Kent says:

Why is he Still in college Mark

      1. Mark (East Lansing) says:

Promised his grandma two years ago right before she passed that he would graduate. He’s a good kid.

      2. Mark (East Lansing) says:

Set school record for most points in a tournament game. And if that wasn’t enough, set NCAA tournament record with 17-17 from the line. Unbelievable performance.

        1. SW Kent says:

I agree. I’m a UM fan but I like him.

  7. I forgot to share this yesterday. I was sitting in class yesterday and as you looked out the window, it looked like it was snowing but it was really the rain. As students came in, several people in a row said What?! its snowing?! and they let out a big groan. I told them that it was rain and all of them said thank god, I am so sick of the snow lol.

  8. Wswplz says:

I was just reading through the NWS forecast and they were mentioning that an upper high in Alaska with a closed low south of that over the Pacific or a Rex Block in other words helping us stay locked in this upper eastern trough. As I recall we had a similar situation last year during the spring with an upper high directly north of a closed low, which produced some fairly decent thunder storms coming out of the north west. Does any else remember this?

    1. Wswplz says:

      * the placement was different with the Rex block last year, I should point out.( not implying weather to come btw )

      1. Wswplz says:

Where is Cort, he might remember this last year. Cort come back before your converted, they won’t stop trying, I know because they came to my dorm room every week. J/k but that did really happen. Lol

    2. Rocky (Rockford) says:

      Bring it!

    3. Larry of Hastings, barry co says:

      How many days out?

  9. Brian (Grandville) says:

Well I no longer have a chance to win that billion dollars, with Ohio State and Cincinnati losing. Upsets, what a bunch of bs.

    1. Wswplz says:

I’ll float ya some of my winnings no worries Brian.

    2. Wswplz says:

Look to the bright side, after getting your new job you want need that cash anyways. hehe

  10. Rocky (Rockford) says:

Check out these temps on April 3rd! I love it! Keep the COLD, COLD, COLD coming!

    http://www.instantweathermaps.com/GFS-php/showmap-conussfc.php?run=2014032018&time=INSTANT&var=TMP&hour=324

    1. Wswplz says:

I notice you have left out snow and what good is cold without snow? Only snow and cold plz or sun and storms if not. :)

    2. Rodey (Rockford) says:

Fantastic. That still means temps in the 40′s. Bring it. I love it. Who knew? Thanks for listening.

  11. Rocky (Rockford) says:

This will make 15 weekends in a row with excellent outdoor winter sports conditions! Sunday looks AWESOME! Temps in the 20′s with plenty of SNOW on the trails! Imagine that! My ski trip in April is right on track!!!

    1. SW Kent says:

      Fantastic conditions.
Get out there folks and enjoy these conditions.

  12. Mark (East Lansing) says:

I’m so glad Bill put up a sports thread.

    1. Mark (East Lansing) says:

Since, you know, the weather has been so uneventful lately.

      1. Wswplz says:

Great point, sports are always a good topic which everyone should like, if not well, your an alien. :)

  13. Jack says:

    Thank – YOU….Good Lord for Another AWESOME SUNSET!!! CUE,,,,,,Wayne Watson, ” There Goes Sundown”. :::: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=-J6QOiW-DsE. :-)

  14. Good News! the Spring Outlook has us only in a 30% chance range for below normal temperatures. Not to bad! The flood risk for Michigan is up to Moderate though.

    http://www.cpc.ncep.noaa.gov/products/predictions/long_range/seasonal.php?lead=1

    1. Wswplz says:

Actually that map would indicate a higher probability than 30% but who’ s counting I’ll take it.

      1. Still its WAY better than we have seen in a while. I will not complain about what that map has.

        1. Wswplz says:

          Agreed

      2. Wswplz says:

Going by the darker shaded contour, approx. in the Big rapids area and above have a 26.67% chance of seeing above average temps, looking at it in reverse.

  15. Wswplz says:

Here is our big snow storm this weekend via the 4 panel winter plot:

    Western- one and done

  17. SW Kent says:

I agree. I’m a UM fan but I like him.

    1. Mark (East Lansing) says:

Blue is really good and should go deep this year. They’ve been fun to watch.

      1. Nate says:

Didn’t have a great showing against a terrible Wofford team.

  18. Barry in Zeeland says:

Wow, check this out. Go to http://www.spaceweather.com and read the article titled SOLAR ‘SUPERSTORM’ NARROWLY MISSES EARTH: . 2 years ago we just missed (by 1 week) a massive solar storm that would have crippled the earths power grid. Scary stuff. We take a direct hit from a solar storm like that, we’re back to the stone age.

    1. Brian(Grandville) says:

Barry, someone posted about a week ago of a possible big time meteor shower in May, what do you think.

      1. Barry in Zeeland says:

It is possible. We will be going right through the debris trail of a comet, problem is the comet is a old one that has been around the sun many times, 5 year orbit I believe. This means that the debris coming off the comet is probably not much, but any new outbursts as it comes by would give us a meteor storm. Keep your fingers crossed.

  19. Brian(Grandville) says:

The #12′s beating #5′s have been killing my bracket for the second strait year now!

    1. steven (Derby Lake) says:

Villanova on upset alert??? It’s still early.

  20. steven (Derby Lake) says:

I had a perfect bracket going up until Oklahoma just lost,,,,, I mean gave it away. I was kicking myself by not picking NC state, whew thank god Saint Lewis came back from 1 down. UCONN also. I’ve had a few Fred Sanford moments, “here comes the big one”.

    1. Nate says:

I took North Dakota State over Oklahoma. I had a perfect bracket until NC state lost..lol

      1. Steven(DerbyLake) says:

I think oklahoma shot 40%. They shouldve been like a 8 seed. Their young. I had them winning the next round also.

        1. Wswplz says:

Top 20 brackets still pay $100,000 …. 45,000 for filling out a bracket, not bad! Have you seen the odds on filling out a perfect bracket, it’s not gonna happen, better chances hitting the mega millions lottery, no I take that back, 3.52 billion times better odds. Good Luck. :)

  21. steven (Derby Lake) says:

    16 down*

  22. Nate says:

I think Bill should just keep this sports blog up and not make another weather blog/post until it warms up. Only 6 comments from ROCKY the whole night! RECORD!

  23. Steven(DerbyLake) says:

Tommy Amaker former Michigan coach going up against MSU saturday

    1. Mark (East Lansing) says:

He’s done a fine job at Harvard.

  24. Wswplz says:

I hope SDSU doesn’t let up, look good so far….

  25. Wswplz says:

Actually seeing some warm advection to the far south a east, I wonder how far north it will come. Definitely moisture will be hard to find, but I it’s possible people closer to the border could see some flurries. After we warm up some tomorrow the cold air returns to its vacation home aka MI , will we see some lake effect Saturday evening , we could possibly see a little with this next shot of cold air and some open water to work with. Sounds like the flood risk has subsided for now as the ice jams have moved down stream.

    1. Jacob G. says:

I see the NAM is trying to sniff out something for central-MI towards the thumb region.

      http://www.instantweathermaps.com/NAM-php/showmap-conussfc.php?run=2014031100&time=PER&var=ASNOWI&hour=045

        1. Wswplz says:

Looks like we were thinking the same thing…lol. We need this low to drop more before it moves north east and then when that cold air comes in behind we could see some accums. WPC track would be still north.

          http://www.wpc.ncep.noaa.gov/pwpf/wwd_accum_probs.php?fpd=24&ptype=snow&amt=1&day=2&ftype=probabilities

      1. Wswplz says:

        * I should add: of course the snow will be to the north of the system , so let’s hope we don’t get trucked again by the low, however the evidence is sure pointing toward a direct hit.

        1. Jacob G. says:

That is true, the trend is sinking south. I will stay up for the Canadian and Euro tonight to see if they show it sinking south as well. In terms of March madness and D. Vitale it is a “Knee Knocker”…lol

          http://espn.go.com/dickvitale/vspeak/index.html

        2. Wswplz says:

          Haha lol…

    2. Wswplz says:

      * side note the 00z GFS is has moved a little south, still not what it was last week, and especially compared to that of the ecmwf . Take a look again tomorrow, kinda funny because were usually trying to encourage a more northern track.

      1. Jacob G. says:

You watching that storm of the east coast next week on the models? And like Bill said mixed bag storm coming late next week for Midwest area.

        1. Wswplz says:

Ya ,a little here and there…he did mention that.

  26. Larry of Hastings, barry co says:

What date is everyone looking at for our first thunderstorm/ severe weather?

    1. Wswplz says:

      It’s really hard to say with convective storms as they are usually week to week. Here is the 4-8 outlook from SPC ;

      http://www.spc.noaa.gov/products/exper/day4-8/

Not too much in the hooper.

      1. Wswplz says:

        * complete guess: First thunder storms beginning of April, first severe weather end of May.

        1. Wswplz says:

          * and that’s me being optimistic …lol. I wouldn’t be surprised if if was almost July before we really get going. I would like one tomorrow!

      2. Jacob G. says:

I am sure like a Bill or Cort could dig this up but I would guess Kent County usually gets some sort of Watch/Warning in the month of April. April can be one of those tricking months where you can get summer like warmth but also flurries/snow. However in my years of living in West MI we get most of our severe weather events from warm fronts and MCS coming through. The cool waters with advancing cold fronts gives us a lake shadow quite a bit. Somebody asked a question the other day if the lake takes longer to warm up could we have better changes of convergence with lake bands and I would think we would.

        1. Jacob G. says:

          * Lake bands as in warm humid inland with S/SE wind and land breeze kicks with W wind in early afternoon as the cold air goes inland from the lake and you get the lift from the topography on the land and the convergence of winds. Can produce some heaving rain as they bands can sit over one area.

        2. Wswplz says:

Makes complete since just as the same way one would get a lake breeze only add instability to the equation, and you will have convection. Makes sense to me.

        3. Wswplz says:

See we are definitely on the same page, as it looks like you officially looked it up. Speaking if topography / orography do you see what I posted about LES the other day. Basically I found that you can increase lake enhanced snow by nearly 8-12″ for every 100 ft of elevation . Pretty crazy.

        4. Wswplz says:

AKA -’lake breeze front… I know that not to common however, but it would be nice if the lake and it’s winds did something other than shred storms lol

      3. Larry of Hastings, barry co says:

The first real warm day in April, what I am betting on.

  27. Dan says:

How about the first day of real tournament action? WOW! Harvard upsets Cincy and Dayton takes down OSU. UCONN was in a fight. Louisville almost got beat. North Dakota State playing with some MOJO!
Michigan better clean it up before they play Texas tomorrow!
    GO BLUE!

  28. Larry of Hastings, barry co says:

GO. BLUE….The president picked the right state, but the wrong team.

  29. steven (Derby Lake) says:

I’m only playing in the ESPN bracket challenge. I have 1 serious bracket and 3 others with some upsets built in. Thanks to Oklahoma, I took one on the chin yesterday for the only blemish. I also had them going to the sweet 16. I’m currently ranked in 18,742nd place @ 99.8%.

Today has me a little nervous on a couple picks. I have SF Austin over VCU as my only big upset. I went straight higher seeds on my picks for the second day. I almost think I should have taken TN or UMASS

  30. steven (Derby Lake) says:

    TN over UMASS*

  31. Mark (East Lansing) says:

Staying on sports – went to the Breslin Center and watched the two Class A semifinal boys hoops games today. Muskegon and Bloomfield Hills advance to the finals. Muskegon looked GOOD. Should be a good final.
