Lake Superior may set record for latest ice date, I think I saw the latest maybe May 28th? Maybe somebody can confirm that. The mean thickness of the ice is about 13″ but some areas are 3-4 feet. Maybe ice still in June up there? That would be impressive!

I am sure the ice fishing people are happy to be out on the frozen lake this late in March.

This is in response to Jacob G question. According to Karl Bohnak is his book “So Cold a Sky” some of the latest dates that boats could reach Marquette are May 21st 1873 and May 20th 1875. In 1873 there was still ice in the Marquette harbor in June and some ice chunks on the 4th of July (So Cold a Sky Pa 130) While its not known if that is the latest there has been any ice on Lake Superior or not. On page 244 there is a picture of 4 people on a beach on June 1st 1996 getting ice from the lake and there is a lot of ice still there and that was 1996 ! So yes there very well could be ice yet floating around Lake Superior into June this year.

Another cold morning , well not compared to our normal deep freeze, but toward the end of March it sure is burr. Some good games today, unbeaten shockers moving up in talent against Kentucky should be interesting. Nice to see both Michigan teams moving on to the sweet 16 as well as Bill’s badgers in a comeback victory last night, also my Aztecs are still in it as well. March Madness ” baby “!!

      * how many brackets were shaken up yesterday as I’m willing to bet most didn’t have Dayton winning that game last night, well maybe more so in our area and just to our south might have picked them to win. But a stunner non the less. Sorry to talk hoops , but what a line up of games we have had and today is no different !! Kansas vs Stanford , Iowa St vs N.C , Merecer vs Tenn , AZ vs Gonz , Virginia vs Memphis , just to name the ones I can think of as I know there are a few more good ones as well. Tuesday morning still looks like we could see a few inches of the fluffy white, although they have shifted the snow more south from yesterday’s run. Either way doesn’t look like more than 1-2″ at the most with more giving current thinking for the southern cwa. Off to my couch to enjoy this epic winter basketball watching weather. Lol
