modis lake michigan  modis lake superior modis lake huron   modis lake ontariomodis lake erie These are the MODIS satellite pictures from Weds. (Lake Superior is from Tuesday – clouds and a snowstorm there on Weds).  Pics. from NOAA Coastwatch.  First, there is STILL some ice west of Ottawa and Allegan Counties!  Note on the Lake Ontario picture the snow on the Tug Plateau east of the lake.  There’s still a fair amount of ice on Lake Superior and some ice left on Erie and Huron.  This is the most ice on the Great Lakes this early in winter.  The NOAA Coastwatch Analysis on 4/15 showed a Great Lakes ice cover of 39%.   Lake Michigan is still at 21%.   Several new threads from Weds. evening below, read on if you have the time…      Also, the eclipse viewed from Canada.   From the Storm Prediction Center – Severe Weather Next Week:  “THE HIGHEST SEVERE POTENTIAL APPEARS TO BE CENTERED AROUND D8/WED OVER THE GREAT PLAINS.”

I wonder if the severe storms will move into the Great Lakes area next week? I am sure the storm chasers will be watching the Great Plains.

  2. Larry of Hastings, barry co says:

Last weekend, I was surprise to see all those severe storms make it across the cold waters of Lake Michigan.

  3. jake says:

Who gives a crap try writing a blog about the upcoming warm weather

    1. norm says:

      Jake? From State Farm?

      1. Larry of Hastings, barry co says:

      2. Right around 63 in Walker. Love it :)

        1. Not sure how this posted here…sry

    2. Rad (Jenison/Hudsonville) says:

    3. GunLakeDeb says:

Um, because all this ice/cold water is going to AFFECT our upcoming weather???

  4. DF (SE Mich) says:

The last two days really swung April back towards the cold side. Flint is the highest around at +0.5° and Muskegon is now the lowest at -1.8°. An amazing swing in just two days, about 3°. Hopefully the warm actually comes at the end of the month to move it back to positive. Average highs are 60° in Detroit and 59° in GR, we are getting there.

    1. SlimJim NW GR (1) says:

Here in GR we are now back down to -1.1° And in the UP Marquette is now at -3.9° and now is back up to 22” of snow on the ground.

      1. jake says:

        Bill us that you

        1. Jeff (Richland) says:

English must not be your first language.

  5. SlimJim NW GR (1) says:

Well here we are now on April 17th and guess what? There is more snow in Michigan’s UP looking at Houghton it looks like they are still getting heavy snow yet!

And off to the east in the Munising area they also received new snow

That new snow cover and all of the ice still in the great lakes will still mean that even when we do warm up we are just a wind off any of the lakes away from a fast and deep cool down! And that could be the case will into the summer.
Down here in SW lower we are off to a mild (for this year) start to the day and should make it into the 50’s today. We will have to see just how much warm air we can get here next week and how much the cold lakes keep us down.

    1. jake says:

Uh we had a warm week last week and there was more ice on the lakes.

      1. GunLakeDeb says:

And that’s why it was 80 on the west side of the lake on Saturday, and 72 on the east side.

    2. H&L says:

Slim thanks for the positive outlook.

      1. DF (SE Mich) says:

No more jake alias this morning?

        1. Jacob G. says:

oh boy “jake” sure is grumpy in the mornings. And I am not talking about myself, lol.

        2. H&L says:

Hey Captian Hook, i dont know Jake. But I would ecpect you to comment on this thread you have the same glass is half empty outlook on everything

      2. jake says:

How is this positive. He’s talking about snow and cold in april. No snow and cold here in grgrand rapids.

    3. DF (SE Mich) says:

Two days in a row of record low temps up there.

      509 PM EDT WED APR 16 2014

      1. H&L says:

Why do we keep talking about the UP they are over 300 miles away it has as much to do with our weather here as Cincinnati or St. Louis also 300 miles away.
Give the UP is cold talk a break we all know thats why we dont live there.

        1. Barb says:

St. Louis is 500 miles away.

        2. fixxxer says:

H&l its cause woodtv likes cold weather hype. I think joe.b must work there now.

      2. GunLakeDeb says:

“Subzero” – there’s a word that seldom comes to mind in Michigan in APRIL…. poor Yoopers just can’t catch a break….

    4. fixxxer says:

Slim your always are soo cold weather bias. No offense of course.

  6. Travis (Oakland County) says:

Still positive for April here. And if the warm up holds as the models are currently indicating, I should end April above average.

Pretty remarkable when the clear consensus was that April was going to be very cool due to the ice and the cold pattern we had been in. Goes to show you, Mother Nature always has the last laugh.

Chicago is now above average for April as well. No word from Bill yet on the upcoming warm up, but Tom Skilling put out a nice graphic on the mild pattern last night. Shows the 80 degree line sneaking into extreme southern Michigan.

Buds are starting to pop here, the grass is greening up nicely, and the last time I saw ice on any lakes was a few weeks ago.

    1. SlimJim NW GR (1) says:

Even here in GR the grass is turning green. The daffodils are out the buds on some of the trees are now out as well…..BUT while much smaller then they were there are still snow piles around the area and just the other day we had two inches of snow on the ground and yesterday we had a low temp of 22°. While it will warm up we will not be out of the woods for frost and if the green up come too soon (for this year) a killing frost at that until late May or even into June. Time will tell.

      1. jake says:

Its rare to have a killing frost in late may and early June. The average last ftist date is may 5th.

        1. jake says:

        2. Jacob G. says:

The mean of 32 degrees or lower for GRR is May 1st, minimum of Apr-06 (1925), maximum of Jun-04 (1945). The mean of 35 degrees or lower for GRR is May 12th, minimum Apr-15 (1916), maximum of Jun-11 (1980).

        3. Barb says:

I think we had a late frost within the last 3-5 years.

    2. jake says:

And why would bill post anything about warm weather he will be talking about snow in July.

      1. fixxxer says:

    3. DF (SE Mich) says:

That’s the 75° line but that would still be awesome! It’s looking good.

      1. Travis (Oakland County) says:

Funny thing. WXYZ doesn’t seem sold yet. While it’s pretty mild, only one day at 70 so far in their extended. Hmmmm

    4. GunLakeDeb says:

But Travis – you’re on the east side of the state. Mother Nature is not laughing – she’s over here freezing our butts off.

  8. Travis (Oakland County) says:

Up to 58 degrees at 1pm here. My average high for the day. Are temps not going to go up at all in the afternoon? Forecast was only for 56.

    1. Travis (Oakland County) says:

Ahh up to 60 degrees now.

      Raise those temps, WOOD ;)

      1. Mark (East Lansing) says:

You’re asking a Grand Rapids station to change their forecast for Flint, Oxford, Detroit, or wherever you’re based today?

        1. Travis (Oakland County) says:

It’s 60 degrees in Flint, Lansing, and GR currently

        2. Mark (East Lansing) says:

Correct. A mere two degrees higher than forecasted as per WOOD’s website. Close enough for me.

        3. Travis (Oakland County) says:

Yep they raised it once today already. That sun is strong!

        4. Mark (East Lansing) says:

Nice to see a near average day again.

        5. Travis (Oakland County) says:

You were saying something about the forecast being close…

        6. Mark (East Lansing) says:

  9. Jacob G. says:

So I still have eyes on next week Thursday/Friday time frame for severe weather. Some of the medium range models are coming into a better agreement. Could be a warm front scenario again initially with a LP and cold front to later come through. I wouldn’t be surprise to see SPC start to highlighting days 5-7, however just like last event we were not even in the slight risk so stay tuned to later forecasts and discussions. As long as these warm-ups are transient we will continue to see these warm front type severe weather setups for awhile. Also starting to look into May and I see some signs of the NAO/AO to go negative and that would temper our temps a bit. May can be an interesting month as the plains heat domes builds it can actually cause more easterly winds and backdoor cold fronts in our region and that can bring in cooler air, and that can also keep giving us warm front severe weather events. Glad to see Easter weekend is looking spring like and next week lets see if we can get some 70′s going.

    1. Larry of Hastings, barry co says:

      +1…enjoyed your updated info, thanks.

    2. Mark (East Lansing) says:

Keep an eye on that for us, Jacob.

    3. Larry of Hastings, barry co says:

When do you think we will get a better picture on what will happen? I am sure next week Monday we might know more. This will be a fun system to watch. I bet the storm chasers are hoping to see one of those big Great Plains tornadoes next week.

  12. Just hit 60 degrees here in Byron Center

  13. I now have 63 degrees here in Byron Center. I have rose 3 degrees in 53 minutes. That beats the expected high of 58 for today. Just goes to show you April Sunshine is powerful

  14. Travis (Oakland County) says:

63 degrees here now too! 7 degrees more than forecast for my area.

    1. Mark (East Lansing) says:

You’re in a completely different CWA. Well shame on NWS Detroilet and WXYZ.

  15. SBPortage002 says:

It is 64 now around here.

  16. Jack says:

    63.5* in Gr ..stay cued..

  17. John (Norton Shores) says:

56 here, it’s not 60 but it’s warmer than forecasted here, nice day! :) Sunday looks like a very nice day with temps well into the 60′s and maybe approach 70, great timing for Easter and all those Easter egg hunts going on.

  18. GoBlue1984 says:

Just heard a lawnmower outside! Spring is officially upon us!

  19. Nathan (Forest Hills) says:

Wow its way warmer than I was expecting today. I also see very few clouds in the sky! A fantastic day to be outdoors :)

    1. Jack says:

      Indeed……stay Cued

  20. Rocky (Rockford) says:

Keep the 60′s and 70′s rolling baby! Golf here I come! I love it!

    1. jake says:

Says the same guy that was so excited to ski in may.

      1. Mark (East Lansing) says:

        C’mon, kids read this blog.

      2. DarrenSVRtsm ( Cedar S ) says:

        Classy….stay classy jake!

    2. Barb says:

You changed your tune quickly, Rocky.

      1. Rocky (Rockford) says:

Just the facts. I love COLD and SNOW because it leads to outdoor winter sports, however when it is clear that winter is over I am ready to transition to my summer sport of GOLF! Basically I make the best of any weather that comes my way! Imagine that! What a concept! There are many people around here that could learn that lesson!

  21. Current Temperatures at 5:30

    Grand Rapids: 62
    Kalamazoo: 66
    Holland (at airport): 55
    Big Rapids: 57
    Lansing: 65
    Flint: 65
    Saginaw: 63
    Traverse City: 56
    Alpena: 45
    Cheboygan: 42
    Sault Ste Marie: 38
    Marquette: 34
    Copper Harbor: 32

    1. I really feel for the people in the Western UP. I looked at Copper Harbors 10 day forecast and the warmest temperature I can find is 42. I know I have said it multiple times and I know nature will balance out, but I am still very concerned about the wildlife up there.

      1. Barb says:

People interfere too much for nature to return to homeostasis. I don’t know what it will take for people to see that these extremes are not normal.

    2. Mark (East Lansing) says:

That gusty south wind really pushed the temps up down here. Hardly any breeze in the great white north today.

  22. Rocky (Rockford) says:

Winter is over and Spring has sprung! Get outside and enjoy the weather people! FANTASTIC!!!!

    1. matt says:

Cold weather and snow will be here soon. Ice fishing and all. Who knew imagine that just facts thanks for reading

    2. SlimJim NW GR (1) says:

Rocky just take a drive to the UP looks like you still can do your skiing on Mt Ripley maybe into May

      1. SlimJim NW GR (1) says:

        Whoops forgot the link

      2. Rocky (Rockford) says:

I have given this some serious consideration! They are having quite the ski season up there!

  23. Mark (East Lansing) says:

Sunny and 70 for Easter Sunday? What a treat that will be! After church and brunch, I just may have to hit the golf course with my boy.

    1. DarrenSVRtsm ( Cedar S ) says:

Has the grass already come back ( I’m not sure what the term is , after being smothered by snow ) or the course is in playing condition , greens , fairways , manicured etc…… Im wold love to get out on the course again , but I have never golfed in Michigan . I hear the golfing is great around here !

      1. Mark (East Lansing) says:

Far from where it should be by this time. But it’s good enough. :-)

        1. DarrenSVRtsm ( Cedar S ) says:

I hear ya , it’s just nice to get out on the course , and to have sun shinning down on your head , what a concept !! Lol :)

  24. SlimJim NW GR (1) says:

As has been stated today turned out to be a nice mid April day with a good amount of sun and temps in the mid 60’s it now has cooled down to 57° here at my house. After a cooler day tomorrow we should then have rather nice spring weather into next week. Of course as is always the case it also looks to turn cooler late next week. But by then the average highs in GR will be in the mid 60’s and the average lows will be in the low 40’s so even if its several degrees below average it still will be warmer then it has been,

  25. on the Grand says:

The grass needs a lot of TLK and the crocuses never really made it. The tulips are a sorry sight and the roses are dug up and gone, they never had a chance. All in all it has not been that bad. I even noticed all the sky high piles of snow at the parking lots are gone. Now if it would only get a bit warmer so I can clean out the garage.

    1. DarrenSVRtsm ( Cedar S ) says:

How’s the water levels been near your place ?

    2. Barb says:

My yard up north still has quite a bit of snow on it on the level, not including piles & drifts. It likely won’t melt at least until May. My yard here in GR doesn’t look very good either.

  26. INDY says:

  27. Intellicast has put in there forecast a chance of Thunderstorms for April 24

    1. Nathan (Forest Hills) says:

We will also be in the warm sector for the system on Monday, so storms are possible then. Too soon to call for severe weather though… I’m not seeing it anywhere on the grids quite yet.

  28. Rocky (Rockford) says:

Temps in the 60′s and 70′s = GREAT GOLF weather! Bring it!

    1. Brian(Grandville) says:

I saw a lot of people golfing today, cant wait. The courses look to be in great shape.

      1. DF (SE Mich) says:

  29. fixxxer says:

Not warm enough for me yet. Wake me when were 80+. I bet rj is rocking in a corner in his moms room though.

    1. DF (SE Mich) says:

I have to give you credit fixxxxxxxx, at least you talk about the weather. Good work.

      1. INDY says:

        Nice find DF!! INDYY!!

    2. matt says:

      + a million

  30. Nathan (Forest Hills) says:

Good Friday looks… good! (Its always good, Im just talking weather wise) The clouds look to depart in the afternoon and I wouldn’t be surprised if temperatures climb higher than 53 with the robust April sun. The only setback would be winds from the north crossing Lake Michigan that could lower our temperatures. Luckily the winds should relax a bit as opposed to today, even though they were from the south and carried the warm air with it. So Im not expecting a drastic impact on that side of the story. 54 is still substantially below our average high… (ok, maybe not that far off, but you get the point) and we should be warmer by this point in the year.
On a similar topic, the buds are finally starting to grow from the trees and the grass is really perking up :) The only downside is that my allergies have been worsening… at the height of allergy season I can’t even set foot outdoors because I have such an awful reaction to the pollen. Well anyways, don’t wanna think about that right now! Have a good night everyone.

    1. Sandy(Hudsonville) says:

I hear allergies are suppose to be really bad this year because of the polar vortex. I don’t understand it but mine are already acting up.

  31. DarrenSVRtsm ( Cedar S ) says:

Man a lot of rain is forecast for the far southern -edge -gulf. ( GFS 48hr total QPF )

From the NWS forecast discussion and I must say , this is music to my ears : :)

    1. DarrenSVRtsm ( Cedar S ) says:

Usually just use the site for there model runs so wasn’t to involved with the rest of the layout or functionality but seems okay .

  35. Travis Ulberg (West of Martin, Allegan County) says:

Today was a pleasant day, but i just wish the wind would have been lighter. On my way home from work this afternoon there were still a few fields near Monterey that somehow still have patches of snow in them.
