Univ., where I saw several cross-country skiers pass by this afternoon.   It’s May and we still have a 40% ice cover on Lake Superior.  That’s a record for this late in the season.  Check out the ICE TSUNAMI coming off Lake Superior today!!  It damaged some homes.    Here’s an aerial view of the ice on Lake Superior on May 1.   Here’s a satellite view of the ice on Lake Superior on 4/26 (the last mostly clear day) from NOAA Coastwatch.   Snow cover on May 1 in the Upper Peninsula of Michigan included 18″ in the woods ESE of Calumet, 16″ south of Grand Marais, 14″ Hoist Basin, 12″ Mohawk, 10″ Atlantic Mine, 8″ Houghton Airport, 6″ south of Munising, 4″ Tahquamenon Falls, 3″ Ishpeming, 2″ Bergland Dam and 1″ Big Bay.  Check out these webcams (daylight hours):  Sunset Bay, Ski Blackjack,   Eagle HarborScottishack, Granite Island, Mt. “Hotel Yooperfornia”

On a dark, frozen snow trail, icicles in my hair,
The smell a wood stove, rising up through the air.
Up ahead in the distance, I saw a shimmering light.
The snow got heavy and my sight grew dim.
I had to stop for the night.
There he stood in the doorway.
Oh, It was him I could tell.
Old Man Winter was there himself,
Checking in clientele.
Then he gave me a shovel and he showed me the way.
There were voices down the corridor.
I thought I heard them say…

Welcome to the Hotel Yooperfornia,
Such a lovely place (Such a lovely place)
Come to freeze your face.
Plenty of room at the Hotel Yooperfornia,
Any time of year (Any time of year),
You can freeze up here.

Her head is definitely Chook-twisted, she got the Arctic Cat M.
She’s got a lot of  blinding speed at max RPM.
How they race down the snow trails – don’t break a sweat.
Some race to remember, most race to forget.

So I called up the Captain,
“Please bring me my Schlitz”.
He said, “We haven’t had that spirit here since nineteen seventy-six”.
And still those voices are calling from far away,
Wake you up in the middle of the night
Just to hear them say…

Welcome to the Hotel Yooperfornia,
Such a lovely place (Such a lovely place),
Come to freeze your face.
We’re shiverin’ up at the Hotel Yooperfornia,
What a rare surprise (what a rare surprise), if you see blue skies.

Icicles from the ceiling,
The pink pasties on ice,
And she said “I see more snow coming on my mobile device”
And in the master’s chambers,
They gathered for the feast,
They stab winter with their steely knives,
But they just can’t kill the beast.

Last thing I remember, I was
Heading for the Bridge
It’s freakin’ May outside, and it’s still colder than the fridge!

Relax said Old Man Winter,
“Just pretend it’s Christmas Eve,
I might check out for a week or two,
But this year, I might never leave! ”

(instrumental close – add jingle bells)
