Great lakes Ice cover  lake superior ice coverlake michigan ice cover Click on the images to enlarge. As of this afternoon (May 14th), the ice is now officially all gone from Lake Michigan!! It’s the latest that the ice has lasted on the lake. Lake Huron should go tomorrow, as there is only 0.1% ice cover left there. Lake Superior has got a ways to go yet. As of today, there is still a 20.8% ice cover on our biggest Great Lake.  Check out the North American snow/ice cover map and you can see there’s still a lot of snow north of Lake Superior, with ice remaining on Lake Nipigon north of Lake Superior and Lake Winnipeg.   Hudson Bay will remain mostly ice covered through at least June.

Model Update:   The NAM (caribou) starts rain in G.R. around 5 pm – a total of 0.77″ thru Thurs.  Thurs. AM at 7 am it gives G.R. a temp. of 42.7 with a 22 mph NE wind and rain.  It also gives G.R. a low of 30° Friday morning and 33° Saturday morning.   The GFS-plot gives G.R. 0.80″ of rain starting around 4 pm with lows of 33° Fri., 37° Sat. and 34° Sun.  Those are 5-foot temps. for G.R.  There would certainly be some frost scattered around with those numbers.

Also:   Cool pic. of approaching t-storm in Toronto.   Tigers, Whitecaps and Griffins – all winners Tuesday!  No weather station in Texas was warmer than 80° on Tuesday.  24-hour rainfall in Texas:  7.93″ Brenham,  5.53″ Conroe, 4.55″ Lufkin, 4.51″ San Antonio (Stinson), 4.10″ Austin (Bergstrom), 3.46″ Houston, 1.18″ Brownsville.  Houston had more rain Tuesday than Las Vegas NV has received in the past year!   Hot weather on the West Coast Tuesday- high temps:  94° San Diego, 93° Los Angeles, 92° San Francisco, 85° Portland, 80° Seattle.   It was 91° in Tampa and 92° in Washington D.C., but only 52° in Boston.   Wawa, Ontario is down to its last inch of snow on the ground.  Colorado ski season extended into June.

Final note…I get 2 fortune cookies…I open the first one…no fortune, blank.  I open the 2nd one and it has THREE fortures:  “You are admired for your adventurous ways”, “An unexpected payment is coming your way”, “Next week, your lucky color will be green”.    Hmmm!  Wonder what that means?

No ice on Lake Michigan, that’s good news. Now, how long will it take to warm up, so people can go swimming? By the way, Happy Birthday Indy…it’s true, rock n roll will never die, and you will go on living for ever and ever.

I guess it depends on what type of warmth we can generate and hold on too for a good stretch also clear sunny days will also aide in warming the waters. I would think sometime late July just as a broad guess and maybe later to get that bathtub up to temperature , but I really don’t know nor have I looked up the averages. I do hope we see some warm weather back in Michigan for more than just a short stay and hopefully we don’t have to wait another month for this to happen.

Looks like we will be waiting a full week until we have a good shot at a nice warm up. Here is a 10 day loop of the GFS 850 :

No kidding. Five home runs for Victor in the past week.

  5. Mark (East Lansing) says:

So the next seven days are forecasted to be below average. I’m none too thrilled about that. The last several days have been fantastic.

A friend of mine sent me a pic of the shoreline at Marquette this morning. Lots of big chunks of ice in the water.

Jeez , I almost am reluctant to post this , but this late Friday time frame and there is a chance of snow just to our west and northern Michigan. If that just slide over a tad we would be looking at a small chance of snow. I know it’s not in our forecast but I was just amazed to see it was even that close …! Lol
