Frost Advisory – Friday Morning Update

May 15th, 2014 at 4:21 pm by under Bill's Blog, Weather

Advisory  Low temps. early Friday:  32° Grand Rapids (missed record low by 3°), 30° Muskegon (missed record low by 1°), 29° at Hart, Ludington, Fremont, Hastings and the S. Haven agricultural station, 28° at Benton Harbor.   We’ll stay mostly cloudy this afternoon.  An isolated sprinkle or very light shower is possible, but they will be few and far between.  At 11 am it’s only 44° in G.R., light rain and 38° in Benton Harbor and it’s snowing at both Gaylord and Marquette (airport).

At 2:30 am Friday am – Dense fog and 32 degrees at S. Haven…watch for condensation on the road if it gets to 30° and the possibility of a few icy spots developing.  Any puddles from the rain could freeze.  The National Weather Service has issued a Frost Advisory for all counties in the TV-8 viewing area.  This also extends down into Northern Indiana.  The Frost Advisory is in blue on the map here.  Flood Advisories have a higher priority than the Frost Advisory, so those counties with a Flood Advisory come up green on the map, but are still under the Frost Advisory.  The Advisory will be in effect from 2 am to 8 am.  Frost Advisories are also likely for early Saturday morning and early Sunday morning.  At 4 pm, the temperature is 43 in G.R., 41 in Grand Haven and S. Haven, 40 in Fremont and 39 in Ludington, so we don’t have far to fall to frost levels.  This depends on partial clearing (which I think will happen over most of the area) and calm to light winds.  Most areas will still hold a very light wind tonight.   You should cover any frost sensitive plants tonight and probably tomorrow and Saturday night, too.  Also, we have some puddles out there from the rain.  I can’t totally rule out an icy spot somewhere as temps. in isolated areas drop below freezing.      At 6:45 pm, the Port Sheldon Buoy Cam shows 5-foot waves and an air temperature of 39°.    Freeze Warnings for the Dakotas and W. Minnesota.

For the first half of May (1-15) here are the temperature departures from average:  Grand Rapids -0.6°, Holland -0.2°, Muskegon -0.2°, Kalamazoo -0.4°, Benton Harbor -1.4°, Ludington -2.6°, Marquette -3.0°, S. Ste. Marie -3.5° and Hancock -3.5°.   Nationally:  Bismarck ND -6.4°, Scottsbluff NE -4.3°, Great Falls MT -4.3°, Houston -3.4°,  Denver -1.8°, New Orleans -1.4°, Los Angeles +7.1°, Seattle +3.4°, Boston +3.4°, Atlanta +2.2°, Miami +2.2°.     Rainfall Thurs:  8.96″ Mullins SC,  6.43″ Camden SC, 5.80″ NW of Durham NC,  4.85″ Miami, 4.67″ just NE of Raleigh NC, 4.03″ Fort Lauderdale FL, 3.75″ Augusta GA.   High temperatures out West:  99° Phoenix, 97° San Diego, 84° San Francisco, 83° Portland OR, 80° Seattle.  San Luis Obispo, CA, hit 102F today, the highest on record for May while breaking the record of 94F from 1970.

Conversation with my lawyer daughter:

Culver’s Employee: I’ve always wanted to ask you guys, you look so familiar. I used to work at the casino, did you guys go there?

Daughter #3: No…Do you have lots of friends that get charged with crimes?  Most people recognize me from when I used to be a prosecutor.

Culver’s Employee:  Uh, Yeah, maybe

      1. Rocky (Rockford) says:

You are quite a tool! Thanks for listening you loser!

        1. Rodey (Rockford) says:

You would know about being a tool and loser two of your biggest traits. We’ll add a third trait of yours, totally pathetic. Thanks for paying attention though and taking the time to read my comments. I love it. Fantastic. Thanks for listening.

        2. Rocky (Rockford) says:

Wow fixxxer! Get a life and fast or change your meds intermediately!!!!!!!!

  4. INDY says:

Bill last time we had heat on in our car this late in Spring was back in 1977 I was just told!! Good call on the cool down!! This Week!! We call this eye travass weather !!!! INDYYY!!

  5. Michael g (se GR) says:

27* below our normal high at mid afternoon today. Which day of our “heat wave” was that far above normal?

    1. Brian(Grandville) says:

Easy Michael, we can’t use sarcasm on here anymore, it offends others.

      1. michael g (SE GR) says:

Sorry about that. I keep forgetting…..

        1. Ned S. (East of Holland) says:

Where’s Travis? I’m sure it was warmer than normal in Flint today.

  6. Craig (Holland North Sider) says:

I’ve been away from the blog for about 6 weeks hoping things would improve but it looks as though things have stayed the same. Too bad, this blog used to be pretty good.

    1. Rocky (Rockford) says:

      Good riddance!

      1. Rodey (Rockford) says:

Nice springs temps and sunshine coming next week. Imagine that. Who knew. Bring it. I love it.

        1. DarrenSVRstm ( Cedar S ) says:

Do you have an algorithm set up to alert you when Rocky posts on the blog ? Rodey , aka ……..What is the point , as I thought maybe you were just a kid , but I would be doing all young people a disservice with this assertion , because labeling this as immaturity would actually be a compliment in your case.

        2. Rocky (Rockford) says:

No he constantly checks the blog and waits till I post. He is up for the Rocky fan club President role next year. He is the leader in clubhouse baby!

        3. Dikehopper (Fennville) says:

Darren – I sure don’t read all of the comments here, but I had guessed that Rodey (and maybe others) is mocking Rocky’s immaturity.

What is *your* opinion, Darren? Do you regard Rocky, INDY, Jack, etc. as mature adults?

Who do you think their comments and humor most generally appeal to – junior high/middle school kids or mature adults? What would your parents’ and grandparents’ opinions be?

I’m serious, Darren. Into what age group do you place them? Not chronologically, but mentally and emotionally.

        4. Rocky (Rockford) says:

Now that is funny! Keep up the good work! Wow!

        5. Rodey (Rockford) says:

Thanks for proving his point. I love it. Fantastic.

        6. Dikehopper (Fennville) says:

          Rocky at 8:06 pm -

Well, Rodey seems to be right. That is, you proved my point with your reply.

Are you simply incapable of having a serious conversation?

Drop the snark, drop the smartassery.

Explain yourself, explain the nature of your comments.

Hit me head on, like a grown up, Rockey. Pull up your britches and explain the nature of your comments. If they are intended to be funny, explain why they are funny.

      2. matt says:

Warm weather soon thanks for reading fantastic who knew I love it bring it

    2. John (Norton Shores) says:

Sadly, things probably will never improve.

    4. Wayne (South of GR) says:

It’s really quite sad that Bill allows all of this…..wish he would just kick them off.
Rocky comes on here for no other reason that to make people mad.

      1. Ned S. (East of Holland) says:

        He’s obviously succeeded with you.

      2. Dikehopper (Fennville) says:

It is not Bill’s decision alone. It is mostly WOOD TV’s and it’s parent company’s decision. We have talked about it.

Personally, I hope that they come down hard on those who are ruining Bill’s blog.

        It’s a shame.

Bill truly deserves better than Rocky, INDY, Jack, etc. Bill truly deserves better commentary.

  7. Travis Ulberg (West of Martin, Allegan County) says:

I just saw a video on Facebook of the snow they are getting in Grand Marais this afternoon. The snow was even sticking to the ground. I’ve still only had a high of 43.5° which is 26° below average. Today could rank in the top 10 coldest days compared to average for the year.

    1. Rocky (Rockford) says:

      Possible skiing this weekend!

      1. matt says:

Warm weather soon fantastic who knew i love it it bring it winter is dead like rock n roll

  9. bluegill says:

It is currently snowing in NE Grand Traverse County. Nice big flakes. Nice being used figuratively of course, but the snowflakes are quite large. The latest I remember snow in the past 10 years or so is May 21, so this is not exceedingly rare.

    1. michael g (SE GR) says:

This is one time that I’m glad we’re missing out on the snow.

  10. Doesn’t look like this cool air is going to last long! Back to the 70′s for next week! Intellicast has 70′s Monday-Saturday so far so lets hope that is true. Right now I have 45 degrees with some clearing off the the west.

  11. John says:

At least this cold will not stick around for long- back into the 70s next week. Looks like rain on Wed-Thurs at this point. Pretty far out, but does anyone see severe potential?

  12. Any bloggers I am waiting to get my pictures sorted out from my trip to Nebraska. Once I do that I can post a few cool ones I snapped of that violent supercell

    1. Jack says:

      Thanks, Kyle….I’m staying CUEDD…. ;-)

    2. Jerry Hoag says:

Kyle Sweet I will be waiting to see them!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! It should be totally awesome!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

    3. Sandy(Hudsonville) says:

      Looking forward to seeing them.

  13. Ohh and btw if there is anyone that wants to get a better understanding of where I come from this song says it all. Such a great song if you get a chance to play it. The sad thing is my “small town” is being invaded by the suburbs of Grand Rapids. Its pretty sad because this is such a small quiet community that is now being taken over by malls. Yeah…thats just what we need…

      1. I just hate seeing how fast farmland goes up for sale and gets consumed by buisnesses and malls and gas stations. That exactly what is happening to Byron Center..its pretty sad because the fields and woods that I hold a lot of memories at are being put up for development.

        1. Brian(Grandville) says:

Here’s a good one for you Kyle. I don’t listen to country music anymore because it doesn’t sound…..well like country music anymore.

        2. Haha Brian I agree with you. country nowadays is nothing like it used (it is actually starting to incorporate rap into it now which defeats the whole purpose of the music)

        3. Jack says:

I hear YA…and ON THAT NOTE…………CUE :::: Big Yellow Taxi – Joni Mitchell – YouTube
          ► 2:16► 2:16
 ;-) . Classic…..ENJOY….stay CUEDD….For MORE “Cement,Clay, and Glass”!!!!!!! ;-)

        4. GunLakeDeb says:

Same thing is happening to Caledonia.

I lived in Byron for many years – the Interurban railroad tracks were just a path through the forests and the fields. Now it’s all housing developments.

On the other hand, when I was just out of high school (GR Central) – my folks built a house near 44th and Breton; and my grandparents wanted to know why we were moving “way out in the middle of nowhere”….LOL!!

        5. I hear ya Kyle. In our Grandville development, we were the first house built. Our backyard had horses in it…I would feed them all the time…I loved them! Now there are just houses and houses. I remember when 44th St by the mall was just a two lane road surrounded by marshland. I understand building is inevitable, but I miss the way it was.

    1. michael g (SE GR) says:

That’s the great thing about capitalism. If it isn’t what we need, it will go away.

      1. michael g (SE GR) says:

Well, real capitalism anyway, not the watered down Obama/Bush capitalism…..

        1. I am not getting anywhere near capitalism here. I am stating my opinion. I am a small town guy at heart, and hate seeing farmland and such memorable areas go up for development. Does Byron Center really need a mall? absolutely not. There is Rivertown right in Grandville. Just a money maker for the township I guess because Byron Centers taxes are about to rise even more when they are already pretty high

        2. michael g (SE GR) says:

So, did GRANDVILLE need a mall 15 years ago? There was one in Kentwood. And Kentwood didn’t really need one, because you could shop downtown before that.

Development means jobs. Jobs are a good thing to have in the real world.

        3. I do agree with you on jobs. Lots of the stores in those malls provide high schools like me with a nice low income cheap job for extra money to carry around

  14. So in math class we had to come up with a story problem for the class using Trig functions and this is what I came up with

A group of Storm Chasers are chasing a tornado. The chasers want to get to there prime spot which is 2 miles east and 1 mile north. What is the direction in degrees they need to head?

Anyone think they can solve it? lol

    1. Larry of Hastings, barry co says:

lol….my brain working over time….I am thinking real hard.

    2. Brian(Grandville) says:

That has to be close to 30 degrees, I think.

      1. Tiffany says:

        It’s 30 degrees

      2. Yep Brian you were pretty much right. The correct answer is 27 Degrees Northeast.

        1. Brian(Grandville) says:

I was pretty good at geometry, advanced algebra was where I said forget it. Didn’t need the credit anyway.

        2. I agree with you. I prefer Geometry over Algebra

    1. Brian(Grandville) says:

      1. Jerry Hoag says:

Yeah after I did that I was like oppppppsssssssssssss very bad mistake… I cant take it away…..Unless Bill can you erase that part of my comment..

        1. Brian(Grandville) says:

You should be ok on here, just giving you a heads up though.

        2. Jerry Hoag says:

          Okay many thanks Brian!!!

    2. Larry of Hastings, barry co says:

I’ve been away from the blog for about 6 weeks hoping things would improve but it looks as though things have stayed the same. Too bad, this blog used to be pretty good.

Its really very sad that as some adults on here have (especially Rocky)to destroy a once perfectly good blog. I’m sorry but we do not need any more cold and anything that goes with it. It’s to wet, to cold the farmers are having a hard time getting in the fields, and now some of our fruit farmers may take a big loss. Also next weekend is Memorial holiday and I’m sure quite a few northern businesses won’t be doing well like they would like. I’m sure all the business folks (like I once was for many years) are sure saying “bring it, who knew, more cold the better.” It sounds like someone crying out for help that keeps saying it over and over. I really just wonder what ever happen to the professionalism of this blog. :(

Bill. Can you please erase my email for the thread…..PLEASE???????????

  20. DarrenSVRstm ( Cedar S ) says:

( response to an earlier post , sorry took so long )

Dikehopper – In hindsight I should have said nothing , as I usually just sift through the minutia and read the comments with “substance” I guess the reactionary , repetitive comments directed at one person regardless of intent just finally allowed a moment of weakness within myself. As to your question it’s not really my place to pass personal judgement on anyone as I will leave that to those who wish to do so. The people you mentioned – Rocky , Indy , Jack etc have been on this blog much before I and have and have always been cordial with me , as well I have read your posts and found many informative . I will just try and continue to enjoy Bill’s blog and refrain from responding to comments which by there very nature have zero need for comment . :)

    1. Jerry Hoag says:

+1 Gazillion. Good advice and comment Darren!!!! Stay well and strong my friend.

  21. Jerry Hoag says:

Again, Good night and many blessings to all fellow bloggers!!!!!!!!!!!

I gave in and turned the heat on after the house dipped to 52. I have to go out and cover the plants. The grass is up to the ankle and to tell you the truth with this weather I think I would rather have snow, I said it snow. I love spring but this year it looks like it is a lost cause.

  23. Sandy(Hudsonville) says:

Furnace is on here too. Got to cold in the house last night.

  26. Jacob G. says:

I could have swore that a couple times this morning I saw some snow flurries, like one or two rouge flakes while driving this morning. I guess could have been something off of the local trees but I had to do a double take. Interesting to see if anyone else reports that this morning.

  27. Jeremy (Three Rivers) says:

30 degrees this morning. Wish that was Celsius instead of Fahrenheit…

  28. Ben Lamfers says:

Temperature in Jenison Bauer and Briarwood – 30 F at 6:30. Weather underground, same locality and a few blocks away reported 32 F. Roofs on houses white with Frost. Perennials unharmed.
