The snow was getting so deep northwest of Chicago that they had to get the mower out to cut it down. The second is near Marquette in the U.P. after 3-4″ of snow (by Terry Carr Munger) and the pic. on the right is the Marquette National Weather Service Office Friday morning. Here’s some U.P. snow totals. The only Great Lake that still has ice on it is Lake Superior with a 13% ice cover as of 2 am on 5/17. From the Marquette NWS: Here are the latest dates on which a measurable “winter season” snowfall was observed at U.P. sites with records dating back more than 100 years.- Houghton: 6/2- Iron Mountain: 5/29- Iron River: 6/7- Ironwood: 5/28- Marquette: 6/02- Munising: 5/29- Newberry: 5/29- Sault Ste. Marie: 5/29. Note that the four sites with 5/29 all occurred in 1947!
The high temperature in G.R. was 50° on Friday. The last time we had a day that failed to get above 50° after May 15 in G.R. was in 2002. Lows this Sat. AM: 36 G.R., Holland and Kalamazoo, 30 Big Rapids, 29 Hart, 27 Cadillac, 22 Doe Lake in the U.P. Other lows: 36 Asheville NC, 42 Augusta GA, 43 Macon GA, 51 Talahassee FL. San Diego set another record high at 92 on Friday. Rainfall: 4.35″ Washington NC, 4.03″ Camp David MD, 3.73″ Hampton Roads VA.
Also: Flooding in Bosnia and Serbia – watch a bridge get torn away and go floating down a river! The freeze at Mammoth Spring, Arkansas this AM is the latest freeze in the state since 1912. West Palm Beach, FL, broke a 123 year-old May 16 coolest high temp record with 77 F; old record: 78 F, set in 1891. Harlingen, TX, broke a 102 year-old May 16 low temp record with 52 F; old record: 55 F, set in 1912. Dry weather is in store for the 139th running of the Preakness Stakes later this afternoon.
