Great Lakes Ice Update

Great Lakes Ice Marquette NWS facebook    Lake Superior ice 5 22  Click on the images to enlarge.  The first is from the Marquette NWS facebook page showing maximum ice on Lakes Superior, Michigan and Huron.  The graphic on the right shows that we STILL have a 5% ice cover on Lake Michigan Weds. evening.  At this point, you’d have to guess that a tiny fraction might be left Monday morning (Memorial Day).  There are still snow piles and patches left in a few spots in the U.P.  I’ll post the updated Great Lakes water levels tomorrow.  The Grand River in G.R. crested on Tuesday.  As I write this Weds. evening, the flow on the river in G.R. is 11,700 cfs.  Thats’ more than double the mean flow for May 21 of 5,120 cfs.

These SPC outlooks this year are just a little bit different then most I can recall. First we have had the ” tiny ” outlooks and this one is just random. Little patch here and a little patch there….

I was surprised how much water is covering Ionia fairgrounds still when I went by this morning. I know last Thursday it was scheduled to flood through there.

That was a real tough three games in Cleveland and yesterdays loss was the toughest of the three. We (my wife, oldest some and myself) will be going down to the game on Saturday. I sure hope they can come out of there skid by then.

I was kind of surprised on how warm and humid it got yesterday. I now looks like we have turned the corner and there should not be anymore frost in our area (I hope) anyway I think I will finally put the tomato plants in either today or Sunday. And while there is reported to be still some ice on Lake Michigan and more so on Lake Superior so we will still have to watch and see how cold it gets with a wind of any of the Great Lakes for some time to come. And yes there is still some patches of snow in the UP here is Mt Ripley
