Meso-Discussion from SPC

June 2nd, 2014 at 3:49 pm by under Bill's Blog, Weather

meso Still a few showers/t-showers along and east of a line from Dowagiac to Lansing.  They should exit the area by mid-to-late-evening.  Gust to 55 mph East G.R. (treetop level) and near Schoolcraft, 51 mph at the G.R. airport, 48 mph Holland, 47 mph Muskegon, 45 mph Battle Creek, 43 mph near Fremont, 42 mph Ludington…tree on a house on M Dr. in Battle Creek, tree fell on an SUV 3 miles ENE of Castle Park in Allegan Co.  tree down on I-96 in SE Kent Co., small tree down in Caledonia, few trees down at Riley and Butternut in Holland), wires down in Portage and Ceresco.  We also had a tree down on I-96 in Kent Co.   Rainfall varied from a trace to an inch:  0.75″ marshall, 0.68″ Battle Creek, 0.50″ Kalamazoo, 0.50″ Lansing, 0.45″ WOOD-TV in downtown G.R., 0.21″ Rockford, 0.18″ Hudsvonille.  The Storm Prediction Center issued a meso-discussion for Kent Co. north. The showers and thunderstorms will end from west to east during the late afternoon and early evening. Gusty winds occurred in general and not just with thundershowers and the winds should diminish a little this evening. Tonight and tomorrow look dry with some overrunning rain on Weds., mainly from Muskegon to Port Huron to the south.  It looks like the severe t-storms Tues. night/Weds. will stay south of Michigan in IL-IN-OH.

It looks stormy here in belding, but have only had one heavy rain shower, and that was 2 hours ago

  2. glenn says:

WHY? I have been observing repeatedly that a big long front will approach from Wisconsin come on to the lake, then begin split apart at Port Sheldon and be mostly gone by the time it hits Grand Rapids.
Is it the Power Plant there???
    This happens a lot.

    1. fixxxer says:

Its one theory yes. I wish that power plant would melt the lake effect snow before it hits here.

      1. michael g (SE GR) says:

It is NOT the power plant.

      2. Eventually, at the rate the safety reports keep coming out, Palisades will melt the beaches.

        4. steven (Derby Lake) says:

My guess you and H&L use the same computer.

  14. Resourceful Nana says:

Sun is back out, but the rain finally came and I just emptied one inch from the rain gauge! “Quiet” thunder and no wind of any consequence with this last line that went through.

  15. steven (Derby Lake) says:

Missing out on all the fun once again. Of to the south or the east.

  16. I got a few good downpours today. I will not complain one bit. Its better than no rain at all. I know some people were bummed not to get more but we should thank god for what he did give us because it could be worse

    1. Mark (East Lansing) says:

Well said, Kyle. We received about a half inch here. Need more, but it’s better than nothing.

Had to turn away from all the good things that You say
They’re still trying to find a better way, but You know they won’t
Unless they invent one, then we’ll have to patent it

  17. fixxxer says:

Looks as crappy 60s for highs this weekend.

    1. SBPortage002 says:

NWS says 76 Friday, 79 Saturday and 75 Sunday. I will take it if that’s how it turns out.

    2. John (Norton Shores) says:

NWS highs for GR this weekend
      Saturday-80
      Sunday-75

      I don’t call that crapy 60′s

      1. John (Norton Shores) says:

        *crappy*

        1. SBPortage002 says:

          I wouldn’t want to see 60s either, but…it is better than 40s and 50s.

      2. Rad (Jenison/Hudsonville) says:

Fix has to knock 15-20 off the temp. Cause with all the Gloom & Doom sky over his house.

        1. Rocky (Rockford) says:

          + 1000 GAZILLION BAZILLION!

    3. Mark (East Lansing) says:

      Lows?

  18. Kevin (Marshall) says:

.75 inches of rain just south of Marshall.

  19. The one thing that still concerns me is still that derecho west of us tomorrow. I know the risk area goes to Chicago but with derechos there not just going to disapeer when they reach that point. We shall see but southern counties should still be on the lookout. There’s major differences in models so it’s not set in stone yet until we see it going away from us

    1. Mark (East Lansing) says:

Where are you reading about the possibility of a derecho?

      1. I was watching Greg Forbes and he mentioned the possibility. I presume an MCS and Derecho aren’t much different

      2. Kevin(Rockford) says:

        A line of storms= derecho
        kind of like how wind+snow=blizzard

        1. Yeah pretty much . Derechos also last longer and can go for hundreds of miles

    2. Stephen(North Muskegon) says:

      MCS is not a Derecho.

      1. Stephen(North Muskegon) says:

they can turn into one though which is possible

      2. I know that but Greg Forbes mentioned a possible derecho. I doubt an MCS and Derecho are much different other than an MCS is a little weaker

        1. Stephen(North Muskegon) says:

A derecho has to be a MCS that goes a certain number of miles with a specific severe wind criteria so not much of a difference

      3. John (Norton Shores) says:

Here is the classification of a derecho, read the first two paragraphs, gives a great explanation of a derechos classification

        http://www.spc.noaa.gov/misc/AbtDerechos/derechofacts.htm

      4. Cort S. says:

An MCS is a catch-all phrase for a multi-cell complex or system of thunderstorms. An MCS can be a cluster or a line. A derecho is a name reserved for a particularly severe and long-lived line of storms… one that has significant wind impacts over a large area.

    3. Jerry Hoag says:

Kyle, yeah the same thing concerns me too!!!!!! Derecho’s have a mind of there own sometimes!!!!!!!! We will see when times comes to it…

  20. Cliff(KZOO) says:

total of .95 tenths in Scotts today, well needed rain.

  21. Jerry Hoag says:

Why are people saying Grand Rapids didn’t get anything?????? Over at my place it poured rain at least 5 times……and it lasted each time 10 minutes or so……maybe it only favored certain parts of the city….I live by the zoo..on the westside..

  22. Jerry Hoag says:

    I posted this before…..giving it another try…….

Does anyone know of or have….a van for sale????? Email Bill with info or if you catch me here let me know please????? My wife and I really need one bad….Many thanks!!!!

    HOAGIEMAN!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

    1. Kevin(Rockford) says:

      try craigslist

  23. Kevin (Marshall) says:

New cells popping up in Cass county. If they hold together will be moving into Southern Calhoun county.

  24. John (Norton Shores) says:

The 18Z GFS is farther north now for the Wednesday MCS, something to keep an eye on!

    1. Berrien Cass and St. Joseph really needs to be on the lookouts

    2. John (Norton Shores) says:

The Canadian 12Z was a tad more north too, still a couple days more to go, and as we’ve all seen, the outlooks can change dramatically, so yes I would say southern lower needs to be on close lookout.

  25. SlimJim NW GR (1) says:

The sun is out and after some needed rain it has turned into a nice evening out. I received 0.24” of rain here at my house so while not a lot it still was some. And with the sun out now the temp here is now a nice and warm 79°
    SlimJim

  26. INDY says:

Wednesdays storms will be all south of us where the heat is over ridding the Jet!! Iowa to INDY look out!!!! Big Derecho coming!!! INDYY!!

  27. Rocky (Rockford) says:

fixxxer = a whining, complaining, racist = a worthless human being! Keep the below normal temperatures rolling baby!

    1. Rodey (Rockford) says:

Rocky is a pathetic, worthless, sniveling loser of a human being. Keep the WARM temps coming. Bring it. Fantastic. Thanks for listening.

  28. Rocky (Rockford) says:

Hey fixxxer do you always have conversations with yourself on the blog? Pathetic!

    1. Rodey (Rockford) says:

Speaking of pathetic, lets review the FACTS,

1 You predicted GR would not hit 80 degrees in May. GR had 13 days 80
      or above.
2 You predicted GR would not see the 80′s until mid June. See above.
3 You predicted May would be the 7th below average month. Another major
      fail. That’s pathetic.

Thanks for listening and taking the time to comment. I love it. Fantastic. Who knew? Get used to it.

  29. Wolverdog says:

Some rapid development happening just north of the Indiana Boarder with minor rotation at this point. Would not be surprised to see these storms start putting down some rain and good wind.

  30. steven (Derby Lake) says:

Don’t see anything happening on Wednesday. It all slides to the south.

    1. DarrenSVRstm ( Cedar S ) says:

Yup , and I think this record will play again the future , unfortunately that is. :( .

    2. John (Norton Shores) says:

Still need to keep an eye on Wednesday, models have been trending slightly north every so slightly.

      1. DarrenSVRstm ( Cedar S ) says:

I’m not so sure John , as ” most ” everything I’m reading / seeing continues with a southerly trend in regards to the low. But yes I guess it depends on the model , I’m thinking if anything a border event but mostly rain. I think we are going to need to wait until the weekend for a chance.

        1. As much as Id like a nice line of storms, I do not foresee us getting it and it sliding through Indiana. The rain today was much needed and we will get plenty Wednesday I am sure. It would be nice to get some severe weather. I have NEVER seen a season this quiet in our state. Sometimes I wish we didn’t have Lake Michigan. Lake Michigan is a big part pooper lol

        2. John (Norton Shores) says:

Severe weather looks low for this area but the models have been trending the rain farther north, so we could get a nice beneficial rain from it, I hope!

        3. DarrenSVRstm ( Cedar S ) says:

I was very happy to get some wet stuff and I do hope the low tracks north as I could use some more rain. WPC seems to think we should see some but not much for us to the north.

          http://www.wpc.ncep.noaa.gov/pqpf_24hr/p24i_pqpf_ge025_2014060300f054.gif

  31. DarrenSVRstm ( Cedar S ) says:

Here is another look at our Wednesday chances outlining different probabilities , including predicted tracking of the low.

  32. Kevin (Marshall) says:

Southern Calhoun county seems to be the sweet spot for rain today. 8/10 inch in the past hour west of Tekonsha.

  33. Cliff(KZOO) says:

wonder what is causing these cells to keep firing in northern cass and st joe county? just got another sprinkle here in Scotts and looks like more to come?

  34. Todd in nunica says:

I am almost but not really happy for the 12 rain drops I got today…Man is it dry now in this area. Ditches and low areas still squishy but the first few inches are very dry, lawns starting to burn up already.

  35. Once a marine always.... says:

Been reading this blog for longtime first post! Only about .25 inch of rain in Allegan needed more! I find the useless bickering here a complete joke! Good entertainment! And yes why would anyone have multiple usernames very obvious. More proof of people with no life ! Must be living in parents basement thanks to some of you for the jerry springerish entertainment hope for rain!!!
