Lake Michigan Amy Williams near Montague ReportIt   The water level of Lake Michigan/Huron was up an inch in the last week, and up 4″ in the last month.  The lake is 14″ higher than it was one year ago and is now just 5″ below the long-term average.  Lake Superior is also unchanged in the last week and up 5″ in the last month.  Superior is 15″ higher than it was last year at this time and is a full 7″ above the century average.  Lake Erie is up 1″ in the last month and up 7″ year-to-year.  Erie is 4″ above average water level and Lake Ontario is unchanged in the last month, up 2″ in the last year and is 6″ above the long-term average.  Lake St. Clair is up 1″ in the last month, up 7″ in the last year and 2″ above the century average.  Outflow out of Lake Superior down the St. Mary’s River into Lake Huron is expected to be above average through the early summer.  Outflow from Lake Erie down the Niagara River, over Niagara Falls and into Lake Ontario is also expected to be above average flow.

The 14″ of water added to Lake Michigan is (at 390 billion gallons per inch) 5.46 TRILLION gallons of extra water in the lake since one year ago…a pretty amazing jump.

The south mid-Lake Michigan buoy remains at a very cold 39°.  The north mid-Lake Michigan buoy is at 38°.  Great Lakes waters remain “dangerously cold”23 drownings in the Great Lakes so far this year.   Also:  ” fuel could leave boaters stranded at sea“…ancient shipwrecksrising water levels take pressure off dredging…and high tech. charter fishing. 16. Looks like more rain on the way for the Great Lakes region! Some areas could possibly get more than a half inch of rain out of this.

  17. Barry in Zeeland(currently in Pentwater) says:

Great day up here in Pentwater today after all the rain the past couple days. We had a East wind all day which made it perfect on the Lake Michigan beach. The dunes blocked the wind and the sun was smokin hot. We all got fried! Lake was flat and calm as well. I’d guess the water temp was around 60. Cool, but we swam out to the sand bars several times. Felt good in the hot sun.

As for all the comments from Rocky, I had to laugh when my wife commented that he’s really from one of the other rival news stations trying to bring down one of the best weather blogs there is. Kind of makes sense though, if your the competition just spam away with mindless comments until you drive everyone away.

  18. DarrenSVRstm ( Cedar S ) says:

Wow this system that is making it’s way across our lake must be a cousin of the snail …jeez. I looked at the radar about 2 hours ago and knowing this system was a slow mover I said to myself , watch it probably hasn’t moved at all since I last checked ,sure enough maybe an inch…lol.

    1. DarrenSVRstm ( Cedar S ) says:

Sometimes I get a chuckle out of the daily forecast from NWS ( this is not a dig btw ) but I’ve gone from TSM ‘s likely , to possibly a thunderstorm , slight chance , back to TSM ‘s likely again but now mostly after 5 am all over 24 hrs. Lol. I like the likely one much better of those three , however plain TSM ‘s and 100 % heavy rain I’ll take every time. Hehehe

  19. Scott (robinson twsp) says:

Nice out rite now. Actually enjoyed having to let the dog out.

  20. Joe says:

Ya the lakes are up. Lake Michigan hit the 2nd highest level of ice coverage on the lake this winter. Just acouple of weeks ago the last of it disappeared. All this rain is doing wonders for the water lever and the only down side is how high the water table is in the shoreline and furture. Its really going to kill the crops.

  21. GunLakeDeb says:

I agree with the article about boating fuel (or lack of it) – it’s one thing to have ethanol ruin your lawn mower: it’s entirely another to be out on a lake in a storm and have your motor die. Newer car engines are designed to deal with ethanol – most other motors are not (or they are so old that they were built before ethanol was added to fuel). The comments are great, too – someone suggests that watercraft only utilize solar or wind power (?) – um yeah. Let’s see how fast that solar-powered rescue vehicle can get to your kid who just got dragged out by a rip current…..
