Fireworks  Great day today…we’ll call it mostly sunny, there will be some high clouds.  After a cool start, inland areas will head toward 80.  It will be a bit cooler near Lake Michigan.  It’ll be a little breezier this afternoon with winds S-SW increasing to 10-20 mph.  Anytime there is a strong wind, don’t swim near or jump off the piers/breakwaters of Lake Michigan.  With a strong south or southwest wind, a structural current develops on the south side of the Grand Haven pier, pushing you out toward deep water.  You also have the push of the Grand River, which is running well above average flow right now.  You can swim at Grand Haven, just move down to the south, preferably at least 200 feet south of the pier. It’ll be partly cloudy and low 70s for fireworks tonight.  Here’s where you can see a list of Michigan fireworks by date or town.  Tonight we have fireworks in Grand Rapids, Gun Lake, Coldwater, Watervliet, Baldwin and Cadillac (53 places in Michigan all total).

In other news…Friday,Las Vegas NV had their first measurable rain since Feb. 28…Tropical Storm Arthur brings a windy, wet day to Newfoundland, Nova Scotia and Labrador…Arthur did down a few trees on Nantucket…the peak wind gust I saw on Nantucket was 63 mph and on the Outer Banks of NC 101 mph.   Rainfall totaled 8″ at New Bedford MA and 7.2″ at Plymouth MA.  Typhoon (same thing as a hurricane) Neoguri in the Western Pacific is headed toward Southern Japan.  This will be a major hurricane – category 5 and hit Nagasaki and Okinawa hardwaterspout on Lake Winnipesaukee in NHflood reports from New England.    Law enforcement reporting numerous trees and power lines down in Hancock County, ME including Acadia National Park.

Sat. AM low temps:  53° G.R. and Battle Creek, 52° Holland, 51° Kalamazoo, 49° Muskegon, Jackson, Hudsonville, 48° Marshall, Hastings, 47° Big Rapids, Fremont, Hopkins, Belding, 46° Ludington, 45° Reed City, 43° Manistee, 42° Houghton Lake, 41° Iron Mt., Pellston, Newberry, 40° Cadillac, Baldwin, 39° Champion, 37° Leota.    The satellite loop shows high clouds coming in from the west, so the sun will be a bit dim at times today, but still a nice day.   Anyone up for some winter weather today?   Mt. Washington NH is 36° with a wind chill of 12° and a north wind gusting to 89 mph.

In case anyone is wondering – there are still no 90′s in sight! Who knew?

  4. Ned S. (East of Holland) says:

Mt. Washington has to be one of the most inhospitable places on earth. The elevation isn’t all that high there, but the weather is brutal.

    1. Bill Steffen says:

The Bernoulli Effect makes for extreme winds on the top of Mt. Washington.

      1. Dan (Byron Center) says:

Ahh, I still remember this The Bernouli effect. It’s what makes it possible for a jet ti take off. Something about the wind being forced on the wings creating the lift, correct?

  5. Looks like Grand Rapids misses out on the severe yet again tomorrow. A severe cell or two cannot be ruled out but it won’t be anything exciting.

  6. Rocky (Rockford) says:

fixxxer you have a severe mental condion! Please seek help quickly!

    1. matt says:

You’re one to talk. Your mother locks you in a freezer and beats you.

  7. michael g (SE GR) says:

So is THIS the cold front that’s finally going to bring those 90′s that people have been predicting for weeks now??? From the Grand Rapids NWS..

AFTER THE LOW MOVES EAST…HIGH PRESSURE SETTLES OVER THE CWA FOR A
FEW DAYS. THEN ANOTHER COLD FRONT APPROACHES SATURDAY. THERE IS
ANOTHER DECENT SHOT OF COOLER AIR BEHIND THIS FRONT. IT/S FAIRLY
STRONG FOR THIS TIME OF YEAR…SO DYNAMICS SHOULD BE SUPPORTIVE OF
STORMS. SHEAR VALUES AROUND 45 KNOTS COUPLED WITH LI/S NEAR -6C AND
MUCAPE NEAR 2K J/KG SUGGEST ANOTHER SEVERE WX POSSIBILITY.

    1. fixxxer says:

      Wonderful. More cold weather.

    2. Rocky (Rockford) says:

Keep the FANTASTIC news rolling along! One cold front after another please! Keep em coming!

Absolutely gorgeous warm day in northern Michigan. Had a great kayak ride on the Big Lake. A little breezy which kept it from getting too warm on the water.

Been up in the western U.P. and getting ready to go into Canada at Lake Winnipeg and I seriously can’t believe the B.S. on here. I think some people really need to get out of the bedroom and see the real world. Anyway I did go up to Picture rock yesterday on a boat along the shore and did not see any ice. My wifes sisters neighbor took us out on Superior for a day ride watched fireworks and had a blast. People in the area say there is an iceberg floating out in the western part of Lake Superior still. Pretty amazing for being July 4th and wonder how long it will last. I’m getting ready to leave for Canada on Tuesday for 2 or 3 weeks to see some of my wifes family and a couple of friends from college that I haven’t seen in 35 years so it will be fun. Still not sure if were going to make a run at Alaska but I’m watching the weather and see how August and September will be. The boss says she would like to go but time will tell. Get out and see the world and enjoy it have a good night all. :)

  17. Mike (Mattawan) says:

A few summers ago I was in New Hampshire. It was a sunny day in the mid 70s! Just beautiful, we go to the top of Mt. Washington in shorts and tee shirts to find temps in the 40s and (unsurprisingly) very windy conditions as well as heavy fog! It was quite the flip in the weather conditions!

  18. Grand Rapids fireworks tonight were some of the best I have ever seen. We actually sat on the Pearl Street offramp and watched them there since the ramp was closed. Could not have had a better view of the fireworks from that location. Weather could not have been more perfect tonight for them either.

    1. Barry in Zeeland says:

Yup! Perfect night and excellent show! We were probably just behind you on the other side of 131 in the big parking lots. It did get a little crazy with people lighting fireworks off everywhere around us, but couldn’t ask for better weather!
