We hit a deer

deer nbcphiladelphia    We hit a deer at the Hudsonville exit on the way back from Chicago around sunset Sunday evening.  Unfortunately, the deer is now among the deerly departed and there is some damage to the front of our car.  My wife was driving and she is very fond of deer and a bit shaken, but we are OK.   This is a first for us, though I’ve had some near misses.  My middle daughter has had at least 2 car/deer accidents.  My wife also hit a hawk (in our other car) and another bird earlier this summer.

The overnight NAM (car.) gives G.R. .04″ of rain today, then a high of 65 on Tues. and a high/low of 67/47 on Weds.   The NAM MOS gives G.R. a high of 80 today and 65 tomorrow, the GFS MOS has 79 and 68.  The GFS has the chance of a (mostly PM) shower/t-shower at 54% today and the NAM has 42%.   We are not in any severe weather outlooks for this week and there is still no sign of our first 90-degree day.  It looks sunny and pleasant for the 2nd half of the week (slight chc. shower inland on Weds.).

I bet the eyes on the deer where bigger than the pic. I’ve clipped the rear of one, made me feel worse that it lived and probably injured. Needed a new grill and lamp assembly.

your lucky, I have hit 5 over the years, totaled 1 car, and hit 2 in 10 days with the plow truck. Also had one of my road kills stolen (yes I eat my own road kill if its in good shape) I left to get a spare vehicle/call the police and tow truck, (this was when I totaled the car) and when I got back someone had already taken the deer……Air bag went off as well on this crash….THAT is not a fun experience, could not feel my hands for hrs. (I no longer drive with my hands anywhere near the air bag).

How do you drive with your hands nowhere near the air bag?

You’re a legend, Bill. Keep doing what you’re doing.

  4. I went a long time before I hit my first deer a couple years ago on the way North to Manistee. I couldn’t see them till last second due to cars that were oncoming with their headlights. Had I not seen them at all it would have been a hard impact. I slammed the brakes and had the tires just a smokin. Luckily I only had a couple hundred in damage and I believe the deer may have survived without any serious injury as it ran back through the woods.

    Vehicle-Deer Crashes
While the state’s two million deer are most active in spring and fall, vehicle-deer crashes are a year-round problem. Each year, there are more than 60,000 reported vehicle-deer crashes in Michigan.

  6. Jack says:

OH, DEER !! Glad You both are All Right !! Stay CUEDD, and Welcome Back Home…… ;-)

  7. Sandy (Hudsonville) says:

Glad you are both ok. Cars can be fixed. Those deer come right out of no where. We see them a lot in this area.

  8. TomKap (Michigan & Fuller - GR) says:

The statistics would be interesting if we could find them.

I’m 65 and have hit a deer FOUR times in my lifetime. One of those confrontations did major damage to my mom’s car (who I had borrowed for a trip to Chicago when I was in my early 20′s).
Glad you are safe. The impact is rather frightening some times.

  9. Dan (Byron Center) says:

I hit two deer in 35 years plus of driving. Tremendous damage to the both cars. The deer died. Please allow the hunters to shoot more deer. This is even more of a problem up north where the statistics for car deer accidents are higher. Glad you are both ok Bill!

  10. Dan (Byron Center) says:

After the cooler weather this mid week, do we get into a drier pattern? We have had a lot of rain. Did you get a chance to see the West Coast of the US? They’re baking in a heat wave.

Glad that you and your wife are OK. And the car can be fixed and it did happen not too far from home. We got back home from South Dakota last night. We also had accident on our trip. Ours happened on our way to Devils Tower. We were driving on Wyoming highway 24 heading toward Devils Tower and just after the location were you get your first glimpse of the tower (about 15 miles away or more) Three people on motorcycles stopped in the middle of the road to take pictures there was a Chevy Blazer in front of us that almost hit the bikes I almost hit the Blazer and there were three motorcycles behind us. Two of the bikes were able to stop the third one did not and hit us in the rear end. The good news was that the guy that hit us was not hurt and while there is damage to our car it was still drivable but we could not get into our trunk the rest of the trip. Will tell you more later!

  16. Brian(Grandville) says:

In 20 years of driving, I have never hit one deer. My younger brother on the other hand has hit several.

Why not move to a place where the weather would make you happier then, rather than complaining about it all the time? Life is short, enjoy what you have or make a change.

      1. Rocky (Rockford) says:

Don’t waste you breath! fixxxer is hopeless!

    3. Rocky (Rockford) says:

Last Saturday, went out about 10pm to put put the wood across the driveway so the rain would not run into the garage. It was pitch black and spitting at the time, Then all of a sudden 5 dear came running across the yard and right next to me, I could hear them snorting and the hoofs on the cement but could not see them until they were in the distance. I had disturbed them, they were eating apples on the lawn, but it was pretty scarey to think I was almost run over by a herd of deer.Next time I will make a loud noise before going outside, to warn them off.
