Evening/Night Scattered Showers/Storms

July 22nd, 2014 at 2:02 pm by under Bill's Blog, Weather

Bill here – weather is my passion, but it still takes 2nd place to a “daddy-daughter day”.   Daughter 2 and I went to dinner, then to the Tues.night concert at Meijer Gardens, then out for dessert.   The storms have produced gusty winds, a dozen hail reports and heavy rain.  The Muskegon airport had 1.21″ of rain in less than an hour.  The Grand Rapids Airport so far has had only 0.02″.  The heaviest storm/rain will continue to drop south thru  Van Buren Co., Berrien and Cass Counties.  Here’s storm reports.  Temperatures fall from near 80° into the 60s as the storm and cold front comes through.    Radar here should update automatically – lots of links for you to check out below and check the other threads for more on the severe weather threat this evening/night and the long-range outlook.  Here’s simulated radar, which predicts evening t-storms.  Here’s regional radar.  The high temperatures in G.R. was 89°, so we didn’t make 90° and won’t for at least the next 10 days.   The only place to make 90° was Holland, which seems kind of odd since the wind was coming off Lake Michigan.  Looks like the wind was coming down a runway.   The Muskegon beach had a high temperature of 77.2°.

Here’s GRR looping radar. Links: Grand Rapids radar, Northern Indiana radar, Chicago radar, Detroit radar and Milwaukee radar. Here’s regional radar, the College of DuPage Radar Map (pick any radar in the U.S.), College of DuPage Grand Rapids radar, the West Michigan Lightning Tracker, National Lightning Tracker, the local warning/advisory map and the National warning/watch/advisory map, and a surface weather map. Here’s recent storm reports from SW Michigan, Northern Michigan, NE Illinois, SE. Wisconsin, Upper Michigan and E. Michigan. Check out the wind and wave height at the South Mid-Lake Michigan Buoy (Apr. to Nov. only), the North Mid-Lake Michigan Buoy (Apr. to Nov. only), the buoy at Big Sable Point near Ludington and the weather station on the beach at St. Joseph. Typhoon Matmo produced 16.46″ in last 15 hours.   0.04″ of rain measured in downtown San Francisco this AM. Biggest one day total since April 27.

I’m under the red on radar right now and it’s no big deal here. Couple of big gusts of wind and it’s raining. All of the thunder and lightning are distant. My ‘perfect storm’. ;)

Finally – the lovely sound of rain pelting against the windows :-) Had some brisk outflow wind before the rain – I’d guess in the 30-35 mph range – nothing scary. I went out at 11PM and watched the light show (CC lightning) to my west/northwest. Very strobe-like. And now the rain has stopped….hmmmm….I think we need a bit more than that….

Lots of lightning shooting over the house and i can hear thunder. Everything is dry since no rain fell here. Crazy. Now i will have to water the garden plants in the morning.

I am looking forward to cooler air and much lower dew points. The air today was so thick, it was like breathing in sand paper for me. I had a real hard time breathing, my lungs and chest hurt and I was coughing more and had a very dry throat for most of the day. I hate this stuff! I do not see the point of it, it does no one any good. Over all this summer has been pretty pleasant for which I am very thankful. I guess you have to take the good with the bad, just wish the bad wasn’t this horrible.

ADA – complete miss as expected. Tonight is the night to try for an amazing lightning photo. Cloud to cloud around here, but the “spread” is outstanding.

  13. phlrnnr says:

Bill, with the storms last night there was an extreme amount of lightning. However, it seemed there was very little thunder. What would cause that? Even when we were in the middle of the storm (in Hudsonville), the lightning was like a strobe light, but there was hardly any thunder. Why would that be?

    1. Sandy (Hudsonville) says:

We were wondering that last night too. The lightning show was brilliant but quiet.

This comment was the most helpful, and my guess as to what happened with this storm in Hudsonville on 7/22:

“something else worth thinking about is the vertical distance to the lightning strike as well as the horizontal distance, something that seems to be forgotten when calculating how far away a lightning strike is…..here’s a scenario….Elevated storm kicking out forked lightning strikes 5 horizontal miles away….the lightning strikes themselves are discharging themselves from the anvil shield, say for arguments sake at an altitude of 10K meters (about 6 miles in altitude..Using simple mathematical formula, the lightning strikes are calculated to being 7.81 miles or approx 13 km away, which could explain why no thunder is heard……”

        1. Sandy (Hudsonville) says:

Thank-you for all the great information.
