Cool Numbers on July

July 31st, 2014 at 1:53 pm by under Bill's Blog, Weather

apn glerl    Here’s a nice screen grab from the Alpena GLERL weather station (courtesy NOAA Coastwatch) showing a few high cirrus clouds and a few lower cumulus clouds.   The temperature at the Alpena GLERL station is 71°.  The air temperature at the Muskegon GLERL weather station on teh beach at 1:30 pm was just 59.4°.   The beach air temperature at the Holland Channel is also showing 59°.  The S. Haven beach showed 67.5°.  The water temperature at Holland St. Park was up 4° since yesterday to 45°, Muskegon St. Park showed 52°, Hoffmaster St. Park was 54° and Grand Haven (with maybe a bit of help from the warmer Grand River) is at 57°.   The lakeshore counties stay dry and the atmosphere looks too dry for even showers to form inland this PM…slight chance.

Our low temperature in G.R. was 55° last night – 7° below average.  G.R. is up to 77° at the airport (73° here at WOOD) at 1 pm, so we’ll probably get up to 82° give or take a degree.  That would put us at -3° for the day.  G.R. will finish with an average temp. of 68.4° or 68.5° – putting us in 4th place for coolest Julys…behind 2009, 1992, 1996 and 2000.  All five of the coolest Julys have come since 1992.  Only one of the five warmest Julys has come since 1955. Our highest temperature for the month was 89° on the 22nd.  We had two highs of 86° and we have to go all the way down to 83° for fourth warmest high temperature for the month.   G.R. had 4.42″ of rain in July and we are 2.14″ above average since June 1.  The average wind will be around 7.8 mph and the average sunshine around 68%.

    1. DF (EGR) says:

Looking good. In September and October I won’t mind a flip flop to hold onto this awesome weather.

      1. michael g (SE GR) says:

Yeah, 70′s from May through mid-October would be great!

        1. +1 on 70′s through October!

  4. Rocky (Rockford) says:

The BEST SUMMER EVER lives on and on and on!!

    1. GunLakeDeb says:

I agree, Rocky – except for a few sticky days – I LOVE this cooler, dry air!!!

      1. Mark (East Lansing) says:

Same here. I love the cool nights and the warm (not hot) days. It’s beautiful here today.

      2. DF (EGR) says:

I think you know but I totally agree.

    2. Rocky (Rockford) says:

Imagine that – everyone agrees except fixxxer and his band of stupid aliases! Who knew?

  5. I don’t see where some people keep complaining about the temp everyday. Whether we like it or not, Summer is way more than temps, it’s about making memories with friends and family that will last a lifetime. Some people really need to go outside and enjoy life even if it is a little chilly or cool this summer.

    1. michael g (SE GR) says:

As long as the urban sprawl doesn’t get you down.

      1. Is does not get me “down” as you state. I like a quieter life style away from the hustle an bustle. I that a bad thing? Because you seem to come after me when I bring up how I like my lifestyle

        1. I don’t have a problem with the city. It offers lots of jobs and most people work in urban areas ( and I likely will too) I just want my 50 acre lot in the process :)

  6. Brian(Grandville) says:

The Tigers and the A’s keep one upping each other. We now have a Cy Young Award winner from the past 3 years in the rotation, and a lefty finally. See you in the ALCS again Oakland.

    1. Mark (East Lansing) says:

      Dombrowski strikes again.

      Six man rotation?

  7. Anyone going to the Grand Haven fireworks this weekend? I go every year. I am sure most people on the blog have been to them if not they are worth it! It’s my favorite display of the year

    1. Nathan (Forest Hills) says:

Heading to the soccer game at Ann arbor

  8. Ohh and 1 more thing. Bill, where did you say is the best place to park for an easy out once the fireworks are over?

    1. Bill Steffen says:

I always park on the east side of US 31. It’s a bit of a walk, but you can often move faster walking than driving. I then head out Mercury Dr. If you’re coming back to G.R. or points south, you can head to M-45 on 120th and take that to Allendale or you can get to 68th and go north back over the river to get to I-96.

I also drive TO the Coast Guard Festival by coming into G.R. on Mercury Dr. That way you don’t get caught in the single-lane jam going over the Spring Lake bridge and onto US 31.

      1. Great! Sounds good bill. Thanks!

      2. Todd In Nunica says:

Too bad they haven’t opened the new bridge yet….its there, the road to it is paved…..but not sure they are gonna open it till at least 2016

      3. Lonnie(Grand Haven) says:

There are 3 park and ride spots on the southeast part of town that Bill is referring to.Griffin school on the corner of Robbins and Griffin,Trinity Reformed church on the corner of Ferry and Grand AVE,and First Christian reformed church on the corner of Ferry and Waverly. You may park at any of these spots, and take a shuttle to and from the downtown area. They run from 10:00 AM to midnight.Best way to get around town, and as
Bill said get out after the fireworks.Be SAFE everyone!

  9. Jack says:
