Weekend

August 2nd, 2014 at 2:00 am by under Bill's Blog, Uncategorized, Weather

The radar in the upper left will update automatically.  I’m off to Grand Haven for the Coast Guard Festival.  I’ll walk in the parade and stay to say a few words before the fireworks (some of the best in the Midwest).  There may once again be a few widely scattered showers and thunderstorms popping up in the afternoon. Again, the chance of rain will be lowest at the lakeshore.  In an overall dry pattern (Grand Rapids officially has had just a tenth of an inch of rain in the last 2 weeks), be grateful if you get a little rain.  There could be a few patches of fog around sunrise.  Sunday looks dry.   Check out Storm Total Rainfall to see who’s had rain today.

Also:  Tropical Storm Bertha bringing heavy showers to Puerto Rico, the Dominican Republic and the Bahamas…should miss the U.S, though a stalled front will bring some heavy rain to VA and NC.  Minimal Hurricane Iselle in the Eastern Pacific could eventually bring some heavier showers to Hawaii.  Typhoon Halong in the Western Pacific is a Category 4 storm with a very well defined eye.   Flooding north of Phoenix AZ.  1.36″ of rain in 45 mins, 2 miles NNW of Glendale, AZ.  Lightning over Phoenix.

Here’s GRR looping radar. Links: Grand Rapids radar, Northern Indiana radar, Chicago radar, Detroit radar and Milwaukee radar. You can checkout the latest Grand Rapids NWS discussion, the Northern Indiana NWS discussion (includes the Michigan Counties that border Indiana), the discussion for Northern Lower Michigan, and Eastern Lower Michigan. Check out Storm Total Precipitation (until they reset it). Here’s the Spyglass Condos Weather Station the S. Haven GLERL station, the Muskegon GLERL station, the Grand Haven Steelheaders webcam and weather station, and the weather station at Holland State Park. Check out the Maranatha Webcam at Lake Michigan and links to webcams. Here’s the infrared satellite loop (night) and the visible satellite loop (daytime), Lake Michigan water temperatures (summer). Here’s recent storm reports from SW Michigan, Northern Michigan, NE Illinois, SE. Wisconsin, Upper Michigan and E. Michigan. Check out the wind and wave height at the South Mid-Lake Michigan Buoy (Apr. to Nov. only), the North Mid-Lake Michigan Buoy (Apr. to Nov. only), the buoy at Big Sable Point near Ludington and the weather station on the beach at St. Joseph. Just out of curiosity, what days have been the best this summer and which have been the worst. My guess Mon., Tue the worst. Thurs thru Sat the best.

    1. TomKap (GR-Michigan & Fuller) says:

Well, I for one can’t answer that.
      I’m retired.
      Every day is Saturday! :)

      1. fixxxer says:

lucky you. yesterday was nice and warm. wish it could be like that all year.

        1. michael g (SE GR) says:

It can. In Palm Springs. You ought to move there.

        2. fixxxer says:

If you pay for the move.

        3. michael g (SE GR) says:

Spoken like a true Obama supporter. I don’t like how things are, you pay to fix it.

  2. dereks says:

I have had 7 tenths of rain since Sunday in northeast Montcalm county.

    1. Better than down here. No rain this week SW of GR

  3. NWS is already talking about drought becoming an issue here in parts of SW Lower Michigan. Hopefully not too bad. Monday a front comes through with a chance of rain but it sounds like most of our area won’t see much if anything

    1. GunLakeDeb says:

Yesterday, I could see a wonderful rainstorm JUST to the east side of Gun Lake; but we got nada. Lawn is getting a bit “crispy” – might be time to finally start dragging sprinklers around. I guess I can’t complain if this is the first time this summer I’ve had to do that!

    2. Jerrod (Hartford) says:

Models are trending drier for much of next week into the weekend, too. Which is pretty okay with me. I got friends racing in the big ARCA race in Marne next weekend!

    3. Alice (Cedar Springs) says:

I put up a rain gauge 14 days ago and it has registered 0.01. Not even sure it that was from a couple rain drops, or condensation! I must have jinxed getting rain when I put the gauge up!

  4. Travis (Oakland County) says:

Starting August on a warm note. Another nice weekend so far.

    1. Mark (East Lansing) says:

I don’t mind that it’s cool during the week as long as it’s warm during the weekend when we can really enjoy it.

  5. Hudsonville Barn Cat says:

Anyone understand what’s going on down in Toledo? I’m hearing that people are driving two hours or more to find bottle water because the drinking water is contaminated from Lake Erie?

Water crisis: new test results expected Saturday evening

Toledo Mayor D. Michael Collins says further test results on Toledo’s water conducted in Cincinnati are expected to be ready by 7:30 p.m. on Saturday and that …

    2. Jack says:

AND….. Toxins detected in the water system in Toledo, Ohio has residents along Michigan’s southeast border under a water advisory in which they’re instructed not to drink the water, even if it has been boiled.

The source may be a toxic harmful algae bloom in Lake Erie, according to the city’s Facebook page .

“…(I)n fact, boiling water can worsen the situation. Water should not be given to pets,” reads the notice.

Drinking the contaminated water containing the algal toxin, microcystin, may result in abnormal liver function.

Residents have been advised to contact a doctor if they have consumed the water and feel nauseous, are vomiting, feel dizzy or numb. Vets are to be contacted if pets or livestock appear sick.

  6. ron (wayland) says:

It seems when it gets dry in the summer that Grand Rapids Airport temperatures are warmer then everyone else around the area. Maybe this could help get a 90 degree reading sometime in August

  7. I see temps in Ottawa Kent and Allegan Counties are some of the warmer temps in the area. Likely because we are some of the drier counties in west Michigan

  8. Rocky (Rockford) says:

I just got back in town and checked out the blog! Boy is the blog BORING and dull without INDY and myself posting :) The BEST SUMMER EVER lives on and on and on! For those of you hoping for rain check this out! Get ready to ROCK baby!

Below average temps with ample rainfall and plenty of sunshine make for the best summer ever!! Mark it down!

Dry in GR and up here in Cheboygan area. My flowers are parched in both locations. I ran into a LITTLE shower only between GR and Cheboygan today.

  15. Nathan (Forest Hills) says:

The Real Madrid game was amazing today (biggest soccer crowd in US history)! During pre-game there were several announcements about possible thunderstorms that could be severe and postpone the game. Thankfully there was no rain, but the clouds did look eerie.

  16. Travis (Oakland County) says:

Wow moon was just bright red!

    1. Brian(Grandville) says:

It was orange last night. What will it be tomorrow night?

  17. Grand Haven fireworks were not to bad tonight. I’d say they were better last year but the finale was VERY good. Took forever to find a spot to park. We parked along US 31 and walked in. It was very convenient
