Showers Push South

August 16th, 2014 at 1:18 am by under Bill's Blog, Weather

I’m on the road this weekend and this coming week, starting out with a visit to the Chicago area to see my 95-year old mother.  One of the bands my brother plays in (Dr. Mark is a real heart surgeon) is doing their annual all-Beatles concert in Highland Park.  That group has opened for a couple of big-time acts – including at the Horizon.  This group has played together for 25+ years.  Here’s a write-up on them in the Chicago Tribune from 1990.  After that I’m heading up into Wisconsin (stopping at Lambeau Field – seriously thought about getting tickets to the Thurs. night game with Oakland) and the U.P. to Pictured Rocks and Tahquamenon Falls to do some kayaking and hiking.  While I’m off – newly married Kyle Underwood will be back. Next Saturday AM, I’d like to get back for the Humane Society Tails on Trails Dog Walk at the Ottawa Discovery Center. Blog updates will be few and far between over the next week to ten days, so I’ll leave it to the astute commentators here to keep you up to date.  Have a good week.   (As of 11:30 pm Sat. night – the line of scattered showers is roughly Holland to Lansing and dropping south.  As it moves down toward and into Indiana, it’ll leave us with a pretty nice Sunday.  The overnight run of the GFS gives G.R. highs of 80 and 81 for Sun. and Mon. with a 50% chance of rain Monday evening/night.)

Bill, put in at Little Beaver Lake camp ground and go thru the short pass to Big Beaver Lake east of Munising. I think it is a 750 acres lake. You will really enjoy the paddle around it. Takes about 4hrs. I did it last Sep by canoe. Have a great time.

        3. Rocky (Rockford) says:

MichiganOne = LOSER! UofM football has lost to MSU three out of the last four years! Imagine that!

        4. matt says:

Imagine that you’ve been a loser your entire life…and you’re just a kid, not the best way to start moocher :D

        5. Rad (Jenison/Hudsonville) says:

Rocky say’s he is gonna retire in the next year or 2, Now who in there right mind would retire from a JOB that lets him go play Golf everyday when there is not snow on the ground and goes skiing or snowmobiling when there is snow on the ground and he still draws a Pay Check ?

        6. Rocky (Rockford) says:

          Rad – ROCK ON baby!

        7. Rad (Jenison/Hudsonville) says:

GRAND RAPIDS, Mich (WOOD) For some people a job is something you go to everyday to collect a paycheck,

        8. Rocky (Rockford) says:

Rad you work everyday – 7 days a week? You might want to find a different employer! I prefer to work about 4 or 5 days per week!

        9. Rad (Jenison/Hudsonville) says:

Sorry Rock, I have not worked in 3 years,I’m all done working.

  7. dano (Norton Shores) says:

Arbor Vitae, WI area is a nice place to visit.

  8. Got a nice pleasant 75 here right now with sunshine. I see we got some showers moving through parts of Mecosta County and now just moving into Oceana County. All the rain is moving NW to SE. Most of the rain as of now at the current movement would stay north of a line from Little Sable Point down to St. Johns. Of course there could be some southerly development and radar will change over the next several hours.

  9. GunLakeDeb says:

Well, congratulations to Kyle Underwood!! And Bill – hope the weather lets you kayak Pictured Rocks! That’s on my Bucket List….LOL! Some of my friends went there in July and had beautiful calm water and could get right next to the cliffs – hope you have the same!

    Here are a few updates:
    6-10 day outlook http://www.cpc.ncep.noaa.gov/products/predictions/610day/610temp.new.gif
    Thunderstorm outlook http://www.spc.noaa.gov/products/outlook/day1otlk.html
The 12 day 80 degree streak was the longest of the year this year. Also last nights low was 12 degrees warmer than last nights low. People sure go crazy when we have a rare cool summer night!

    1. Rocky (Rockford) says:

Wait till today’s update comes out! It will look nothing like that! The best summer ever lives on and on! Imagine that!

      1. Nathan (Forest Hills) says:

        What do you mean?

        1. Rocky (Rockford) says:

The update that you posted is from yesterday. The next update will look totally different! Far less above average! Who knew?

        2. Nathan (Forest Hills) says:

I posted the latest update from NOAA. It changes by the day but I don’t think it will flip that much unless the models are in agreement of a pattern switch.

        3. Rocky that is today’s update. It’s August 16 today

        4. MichiganWon says:

Rocky, you just continue to make friends with everybody on this blog don’t you. You’re such a pathetic looser. If you can’t get along with ANYBODY on this blog that isn’t you, how are you ever going to make it in the real world when you finally leave school and your moms basement.

        5. Tim (Spring Lake) says:

Can’t let facts get in the way of an argument. Who knew?
I think the temps WILL be above average for most of that stretch, although most of the time only slightly above.

      2. Rocky (Rockford) says:

Kyle when Nathan posted this link it was yesterday’s 8-15-14! Imagine that!

        1. Well the new update is in and not much changed that I see

        2. Nathan (Forest Hills) says:

          It’s okay Rocky!

        3. Rocky (Rockford) says:

He originally posted the 6-10 outlook from 8-15-14 – yesterday! Get the facts straight people! No 90′s is sight! Get used to it!

        4. We weren’t even talking about 90′s in this conversation here

        5. Mark (East Lansing) says:

But 90s have consistently been discussed in Rocky’s conversations. Of course, those conversations have been with himself. LOL

        6. matt says:

The mad moocher is cranky schools about to start and he found out he has no new lies for the kids on the playground.

  11. I hope we get at least some rain. It’s getting dry again here. 0.11″ with the last system did not cut it

  12. Jack says:

For what it’s Worth,,, On August 16 in Southwest Lower Michigan…

    8/16/1938
A tornado struck between Oil City and Mount Pleasant in Isabella County. No one was injured but a home was torn apart with the roof carried about 100 yards.
    8/16/1979
High pressure from Canada brings record cold temperatures with Muskegon falling to 36 degrees, the coldest ever recorded there in August. At Grand Rapids it falls to 40 degrees and at Lansing 39. Stay ;-) ……… CueDD

  13. Sandi says:

    Have a fabulous vacation!

  14. DarrenSVRstm ( Cedar S ) says:

I’ve been enjoying our weather so far this summer , however I would like something to track as we have not had much in some time. A nice moderate risk with a healthy dose of SVR thunderstorms would hit the spot , non – tornadic variety of course but some house shakers non – the – less. ( nothing like a good storm to kick start the blog )

    1. +1 on kick starting the blog

    2. Rocky (Rockford) says:

A major stretch of below normal temps with SNOW in October would be awesome!

      1. matt says:

JuYou stopping your lies would be great. Your just a kid who is a keyboard commando that wears hand me downs.

  15. Rocky (Rockford) says:

Here is the latest (today’s) CPC temp forecast for the last week of August! These are updated EVERYDAY! INCREDIBLE! Who knew?

    1. SW Kent says:

      1. Rocky (Rockford) says:

Agreed – bring on the rain!

  17. Rocky (Rockford) says:

fixxxer you and your band of clones are totally ignorant! Get a life!

    1. matt says:

Youre a moocher get out of the basement and get a job and stop lying about your fantasy golf trips

  18. John (Norton Shores) says:

Here comes some more much needed rain! :)

    1. Share with me! Lol I am at 0.51″ for the month. That is way below average

      1. John (Norton Shores) says:

I will try my best! Haha! :) ) I have had about 1″ so far, still a couple inches below normal though so I could and you as we’ll, use more rain! :)

  19. Jeff (Portland) says:

Is that our first 90 i see on the eight day .. Hmm,, Can we make it before this summer is in the books ?? We shall see ;)

    1. Jeff (Portland) says:

Btw Fixx, Enjoy next weeks temps.. Looks like it could be the warmest of the summer ..

    2. Mark (East Lansing) says:

NWS has 82 as the highest for me through next Saturday.

      1. Brian(Grandville) says:

I think they have a couple 85′s for me, and it can stop at that.

  20. Nathan (Forest Hills) says:

In my personal opinion I don’t think that we will reach 90 degrees in the coming warm stretch and the warmest air will likely be to our south. I do think we will be at to slightly above average though, but nothing overly warm. The chances for thunderstorm does increase throughout the short term though with at least a bit of rain likely. Hopefully we get something measurable!

    1. Mark (East Lansing) says:

Down to only a 30% chance for rain tonight. :-(

      1. Nathan (Forest Hills) says:

Hey Mark I was in East Lansing today with my older brother. The campus looks great right now and nice and empty. Very green and moist too.

        1. Mark (East Lansing) says:

Yeah it’s beautiful for sure. Lots of rain to keep everything nice and green. The students are just starting to arrive. Meijer is always packed this time of year.

  21. Nathan (Forest Hills) says:

BTW, just as an observation, right when Bill leaves for vacation the first 90 degree temp is posted in the 8 day forecast. Honestly I don’t think that means much though because Bill is the most experienced meteorologist on the team (the others are great too) and he was probably siding with the NWS on the fact that next weeks warm up will not be as warm as previously predicted.

  22. Rocky (Rockford) says:

    >>>>>>>>BREAKING NEWS>>>>>>>>>>>There are no 90′s in sight! Mark it down!

    1. matt says:

Mark it down you live in your moms basement you dont have a job you lie on the playground to other kids about your skills and youre a moocher….and you wear hand me downs cause you have job. Who knew thanks for listening.

      1. Rocky (Rockford) says:

You have a sickness! Get help!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

        1. matt says:

          You’re a mooch get a job.

  23. Looks like Downtown might get some rain. Hopefully we get a little bit but looks like next Tuesday we have a 70% chance so we should get some better rain then.

  24. Over the next few days I think we will have a better understanding on the temps for next week. You could argue both sides right now, whether we see low 80′s or upper 80′s to near 90 per the Storm Team 8 forecast and the NWS. Lots of discrepancies there. If it does turn out to be warmer, this will likely be our last shot for 90 this summer. We have made 90 in September before, but I do not see that happening this year.

I hope we can carry these 70′s over into much of October and have an average winter around here in terms of temps. Much needed after this past one.

    1. Rocky (Rockford) says:

No 90′s in sight! Face the facts!

      1. matt says:

You’re a dead beat moocher face facts.

        1. Rocky (Rockford) says:

  26. Just got some light rain here. Just enough to barely get the deck wet. Better than nothing!

  27. michael g (SE GR) says:

FWIW, Joe Bastardi has us about -1* for the fall season, and about -2.5* for the winter season, with the coldest temps relative to normal to our southeast.

    1. Rocky (Rockford) says:

      FANTASTIC!

  28. Enjoy your vacation Bill. Congrats Kyle!

  29. Brian(Grandville) says:
