Getting Taunted By Penguin Fans In Pittsburgh
“Grand Rapids, Michigan,” I said.
Sitting in the press box at Joe Louis Arena in Detroit, awaiting the start of game two of the Western Conference Finals. There were more than 20,000 empty seats in front of me when the doors opened at 6:00… and not only did the first four fans in the building have seats in the top row of section 204 (right in front me), but they also happened to be from Grand Rapids. Matt Lockwood, his son Alec (11) and Scott Radakovitz and his son Wyatt (10) are here in Detroit cheering on the Wings. Gotta love Wings from West Michigan, who make the long drive over… on a school night none the less. Face off is now just 16:00 away. Go Wings.
Quick… hockey fans… when was the last time two of the NHL’s “original six” met in the Stanley Cup Finals?
At the beginning of every playoff year, I find myself pulling for ALL of the “original six” teams that qualify for the post season. This year, that meant five (although two of them went head to head)… the Bruins, Canadiens, Rangers, Red Wings and Blackhawks (although the latter ends tonight).
While the Wings and Hawks are two of the three teams remaining in the Western Conference… The Bruins are now my last hope in the Eastern Conference. Boston currently trails Carolina three games to two, heading back to Raleigh for game six, Tuesday night.
It’s been 30 years, since two of the “original six” met in the Cup finals… Montreal defeating the New York Rangers, 4-2, in 1979, in route to the Canadiens fourth straight Stanley Cup.
It’s time for another… go Bruins.
Besides, the other three teams in the Western Conference semifinals? Ironically… the last three teams the Wings have beat in the Finals.
The Penguins in 2008, the Hurricanes in 2002, and Capitals in 1998.
Now that the draft and rookie mini camp have past, I’m once again receiving e-mails about the Lions new logo and uniforms. It seems opinion is split… some of you like them, some of you don’t. I agree with both sides… sort of. I love the new logo, but NOT the uniforms.
I like the new logo because it’s more of an upgrade than a change. My thought is, if you’re a team with a long history (like the Lions, Wings and Tigers), you stick with your tradition. Let the Jacksonville Jaguars, Phoenix Coyotes and Toronto Blue Jays of the world change uniforms constantly. The Lions did need do something… bubbles was just too plain and perhaps a good representation of the Lions near five decades of losing since he first appeared on the helmets in the early 1960’s. The new logo is the same leaping Lion, with simply a little more detail and a much more aggressive look.
The new uniforms however, disappointed me. I was really hoping, first and foremost, that the Lions would go back to ”silver” numbers on the home blue uniforms. As all of you on my side of 40 remember, the Lions always wore silver numbers on the blue uniforms (with the exception of the one year they changed to Hoosier Red). Al Davis once said it was part of the reason he chose to put silver numbers on the Raiders black uniforms. In 1980 the Lions changed from a dull silver, to a shinny silver. Other teams complained about the glare from the sun, off the numbers, and the Lions… rather than going back to the dull silver (i.e, the throwbacks), decided to change to “white” numbers in 1982. I was also hoping for a little “darker” blue… again like the throwbacks.
What I don’t like is the cute little “curly cues” in some of the numbers now (see the 9 & 2 above)… the more rounded numbers (i.e., the Jaguars and Bears) and the font of the now-unconnected fours (4’s) and ones (1’s)… the latter of which now look like sevens (7’s).
When the Lions introduced their now out of circulation “black jerseys”, Tom Lewand said … “And of course, we’ll continue to wear EVERY BODY’S FAVORITE, the throwbacks uniforms.” Yet when the NFL ruled that following season, that teams could have only one alternative jersey…. the Lions, of course, went with the “black” ones, and dropped the throwbacks.
If it was my decision, I’d make the THROWBACKS the regular home jerseys, and wear them with the new logo on the helmets.
Regardless, Jason Terzis would still be a Lion hater.
What do you think?
Despite a sensational regular season and a dramatic first round playoff series win over Hamilton, the Grand Rapids Griffins season came to an end Wednesday night, at the hands of the Manitoba Moose. The top seeded Moose completing a four game sweep of the Griffins with a 3-2 win at Van Andel Arena.

Guillaume Desbiens (4th) scored 1:19 into the period on a pretty feed from three-time Stanley Cup Champion Mike Kean, to give Manitoba it’s first lead of the game. If the Grand Rapids Griffins are going to keep their Calder Cup hopes alive, they’re going to have to do what only five other AHL, NHL or IHL teams have EVER done before… come back from a 3-0 deficit to win a best of seven series.
The Manitoba Moose jumped out to a 2-0 first period lead on goals by Matt Pope (8:06) and Alexandre Bolduc (19:28), before Frankie Pare answered for the Griffins midway in the second. Pare’s second of the playoffs coming on a pretty two-on-one feed from Frankie Lemieux at 12:29. The Moose adding an empty netter late in the third, to seal shut the 3-1 victory.
Game four is set for Wednesday night in Grand Rapids.
As for the series… The Griffins looking to match the accomplishments of the 1942 Toronto Maple Leafs, the 1960 Rochester Americans, the 1975 New York Islanders, the 1989 Adirondack Red Wings, and the 1999 Orlando Solar Bears. That Orlando team, by the way, was coached by none other than, current Griffins coach, Curt Fraser.
There’s always hope.
Already down 2-0 in the series, the Grand Rapids Griffins fell behind 2-0 early tonight in game three, before finally getting on the board midway in the second period. The “Frankie’s” connecting on a pretty two-on-one…. Lemiuex setting up Pare at 12:29 to cut the lead to one.
Greg Rallo opened the scoring for Manitoba at 8:26 of the opening period, before Alexandre Bolduc lit the lamp in the final seconds of the first.
The Moose outshooting the Griffins 7-5 in the first period, while the Griffins outshot the Moose 11-10 in the second. Grand Rapids is 0-for-5 on the power play, Manitoba 0-for-3.
