Review: ‘Where The Wild Things Are’ is a great fantasy adventure

“Where The Wild Things Are” is a great fantasy adventure, director Spike Jonze delivers an incredible world of fantasy focused on Max, a boy with a lot of energy and no friends… who falls into place in the world of the wild things.

While its based on Maurice Sendak’s children’s book, the movie may not be good for young children, as the monsters are very big, real, and scary… a credit to the filmmakers that the wild things were so believable, because if they weren’t this movie would have been hard to watch.

12 year old Max Records delivers a great performance as Max, a wild child with no friends and not even his mom will put up with him because he’s out of control.

Max is great as the crazy little monster who makes his way to an imaginative world, where being a rambunctious tall tale teller is acceptable.   The movie is dependent on the success of Max’s performance and its the best child performance of the year.

Jonze creates a very real fantastical world with convincing characters of Carol, Ida, Judith, K.W., and others… its easy to follow and fun to be immersed in.   The message is pretty clear, that Max needs to grow up and being such a problem child, but its encased in a fun story in a world of make believe.

If nothing else, the costumes in “Where The Wild Things Are” should put the movie up for an Oscar nomination this year.

Review: I’m not sure about What Just Happened

December 8th, 2008 at 1:08 am by Laff at the Movies under Entertainment

What Just Happened is an awkward look at making movies through the life of a producer losing his foothold in the industry.

This was a different way to tell to tell a story… as a credit to the moviemakers, it felt more like a reality show or documentary than a movie… but I’m still not sure whether I like it or not.

 “What Just Happened”

(2008) (rated: R for language, some violent images, sexual content and some drug material) (1 hr, 44 min)

Starring: Robert De Niro, Bruce Willis, Stanley Tucci, John Turturro, Kristen Stewart, Catherine Keener, Sean Penn, Robin Wright Penn, Michael Wincott, Moon Bloodgood

Director: Barry Levinson – “Man of the Year” (2006), “Sphere” (1998), “Wag the Dog” (1997), “Rain Man” (1988), “Good Morning, Vietnam” (1987), “The Natural” (1984)

Genre: Comedy/Drama

The Plot: Two weeks in the life of a fading Hollywood producer who’s having a rough time trying to get his new picture made.

MY TAKE:

Robert DeNiro’s character has serious problems.  So does this movie.

In some ways, the movie was very good… the pacing, the acting, the awkward tension and living the life of a man who’s career is spiraling out of control.

But the movie focuses so much on the inner workings of Hollywood, that it doesn’t have mainstream appeal… there are a lot of inside references as the movie pokes fun at Hollywood that is lost on wider audiences.

Review: ‘Hamlet 2′ a lot of spunk, a few laughs, but little to love

August 22nd, 2008 at 8:00 pm by Laff at the Movies under Entertainment

(RE-POSTING from 8/22/08)

“Hamlet 2″ a lot of spunk, a few laughs, but little to love

“Hamlet 2″ feels like a mix between “Napolean Dynamite” and “School of Rock”, but *without* the dynamite or rock from those movies

(Rated:R for language including sexual references, brief nudity and some drug content) (1 hr, 32 min)

What was it about Drama Class?  Why didn’t I ever sign up?  Maybe because I didn’t think it would be as much fun as the Drama class in this movie… But please, please, please… don’t take that as a ringing endorsement of “Hamlet 2″, because its not.     Unless you are teaching drama or music, in drama class, or a wanna-be actor/writer/director, you should really WAIT TO RENT this movie.
