Review: The Ugly Truth is pretty good

”The Ugly Truth” is a surprisingly fun and blunt romantic comedy.

In this modern romantic comedy “The Ugly Truth” – women’s perceptions and men’s realities clash while the chemistry between Katherine Heigl (ABC’s Grey’s Anatomy, “Knocked Up”) and Gerard Butler (“RocknRolla”, “P.S. I Love You”, “300″) heats up.

"The Ugly Truth" poster courtesy Columbia Pictures While this movie is solid, BE WARNED its also rated “R” and intended for adult audiences.

The collision course between Abby (Heigl), a tightly wound all-business local morning show producer and Mike (Butler), is an over-the-top crass male chauvenist, is set-up well and flows well as opposing and yet equal forces.

Heigl hits on all the jokes and physical gags playing it straight but pulling off the funny just like she did in 2007’s “Knocked Up”.

Gerard Butler is suave and offensive at the same time, he’s likable and hate-able all in the same movie… in the end he proves he can be a leading man with his second successful rom-com:  women like him and men think he’s cool.

There’s also some nice work by supporting cast including Bree Turner, Cheryl Hines, John Michael Higgins, Nick Searcy, and Jesse D. Goins… but way too limited of a role for Nathan Corddry (NBC’s Studio 60 on the Sunset Strip), it would have been really nice if he had more than just 2 or 3 lines.

THE BOTTOM LINE:
