New on DVD/in Theaters this week

January 27th, 2009 at 7:17 am by Laff at the Movies under Entertainment

New on DVD (Tuesday): “College”, “Fireproof”, “Lakeview Terrace”, “The Lucky Ones”, “Pride and Glory”, “The Rocker”, “RockNRolla”, “Vicky Cristina Barcelona”

BEST BET: “Pride and Glory”, but from what I’ve heard… EVERYTHING on this week’s list *except*  is worth a rent, although “The Rocker” disappointed at the box office.  Don’t forget “Fireproof”, the romantic drama surprised critics at the box office and did very well for a small budget Christian movie.

New at Theaters (Friday): “New in Town”, “Taken”, “The Uninvited”

"Taken" poster courtesy EuropaCorp.

BEST BET: Finally… I hope… “Taken” is scheduled to open this weekend… I say that because after I saw the trailer back in August, the release date moved from September 19th to January 23rd to now this Friday, January 30th !!!  I have a feeling my review will be impacted by this massive delay.

Also new this week the cute and funny date movie “New in Town” with Renee Zellweger and Harry Conick, Jr. and the horror flick “The Uninvited” from the producers of “The Ring”.

Free Movie Night to strengthen marriages

December 15th, 2008 at 11:58 pm by Laff at the Movies under Entertainment

Free Movie Night to strengthen marriages

Guiding Light Mission in Grand Rapids is sponsoring a Free Movie Night to help men and women strengthen their marriages and relationships.

The movie will be shown at Celebration Cinema! South at 6:00pm on Tuesday, December 16th.

The movie is “Fireproof”, an Independent Christian movie starring Kirk Cameron in which a firefighter uses a 40-day experiment known as “The Love Dare” in an attempt to save his marriage.

The small budget ($500,000) “Fireproof” has been a pleasant surprise since its release September 26th when it opened 4th with $6.51 million.

And the movie, starring a grown up Cameron (”Growing Pains”), continues to hang around, last weekend in its 12th week playing across the country, the movie made another $147,543 for a total of $32.94 million… not bad considering its half-million dollar budget.

In a release Guiding Light Mission says it hopes that “the movie may help married couples work out their problems, therefore averting any marital problems and causing more men to come to the Mission for help.  We are trying to end homelessness before it begins”.

The mission has worked with West Michigan churches and businesses to donate the movie night, handing out hundreds of tickets so far.

For more information or if your business or church would like to help sponsor the event, call Bill Jones at Guiding Light Mission: (616) 451-0236.
