Best Bets: You’re on your own this week… I have not seen any of these movies, the highest on my list would be “The Invention of Lying”… I avoided it in theaters, but considering it as a rental now.

Best Bets: Four good-to-great choices to rent this week… three I’ve seen, one I’ve heard a lot about…

#1 - “The Hurt Locker” is the gripping Iraq war drama about a bomb disposal unit working to clear the dangerous streets of Baghdad… but don’t fret, if you’ve been avoiding war dramas – this is the one to see! Its one of my top 3 movies of 2009, a Golden Globe nominee for Best Picture, Best Director, and Best Screenplay and has been winning smaller awards leading up to the big award shows.

#2 – “Moon” is about a man working on a 3 year mining mission on the moon working all by himself… he’s almost done with his contract and longing to go home… but starting to lose it a little. Sam Rockwell is great and has been overlooked by award voters for this great role!

#3 – Not for everybody… “Big Fan” is an R-rated dramedy about a raving NY Giants football fan that puts his fanhood above everything… even his own well-being. Interesting movie for sports fans and fans of Patton Oswalt, but the adult themes and slobby main character may be offensive for many.

#4 – “In the Loop” is a political satire I’ve heard a lot about since it was in limited release last year… now its available to rent and moving to the top of my rental queue.

New on DVD (Tuesday): “500 Days of Summer”, “District 9″, “Extract”, “All About Steve”, “American Pie Presents: The Book of Love”, “Beyond a Reasonable Doubt”, “It Might Get Loud”, “Staten Island”, “Family Guy Presents: Something, Something Dark Side”

Best Bets: My favorite movie of the year so far and certainly best romantic comedy of the year “500 Days of Summer” is soo good, I almost gave it my first ”10″. One of the best sci-fi films of the year “District 9″… is probably the most underappreciated for being more than just sci-fi/action because of its story and themes of prejudice and seperation… it was a great surprise for how good it was. Either would make a great DVD gift for the appropriate audience.

Altough I didn’t rave about it when it was in theaters, “Extract” should find an audience on DVD much like its creator Mike Judge’s “Office Space” did after its theatrical release… it was good quirkly humor – just didn’t hit me the same as “Office Space”. DO NOT WASTE YOUR TIME OR RENTAL MONEY WITH “All About Steve” one of the most disappointing films of 2009. Sandra Bullock and Bradley Cooper both had 2 other movies that were much better this year (Bullock: “The Blind Side”, “The Proposal” and Cooper: “The Hangover” and “He’s Just Not That Into You”).

A $300 million 3-D sci-fi extravaganza from James Cameron that is now Golden Globe nominated… a romantic comedy running counter programming to it…. and three dramas with Oscar buzz…

Best Bets: “An Education” (Celebration North) picked up a Golden Globe nomination and is in Oscar contention for Carey Mulligan’s performance as the female lead and “Precious” (expands to Celebration RiverTown, Muskegon, Benton Harbor, Lansing) is considered a front runner in acting award categories thanks to its very strong actresses. Back in theaters for a short 5-day run is “The Hurt Locker” (12/18-12/22 at The Harbor Theater in Muskegon) the movie is one of my favorites so far this year and is nominated for 3 Golden Globes: Best Picture, Best Director, and Best Screenplay! And speaking of award contenders, “A Serious Man” moves to the $4.00 Woodland this weekend – it picked up a Golden Globe nomination for Best Actor in Comedy/Musical.

I will be seeing “Avatar” later today, so check back later for my review… but from the 15 minutes of footage I saw back in August – the IMAX 3D looked awesome… the question will be if the story can hold viewers for the 2 hours and 40 minute runtime. As for this weekend’s other movie, I can’t recommend “Did You Hear About the Morgans?” but that’s mostly because I don’t really like either Hugh Grant or Sarah Jessica Parker in movies.

Also – “The Polar Express” will be playing at Celebration! Lansing in IMAX for one show a day at 1:00pm starting 12/18 and running through at least the end of the year.
