Returns for “The Chaos Experiment”, were limited at just two Grand Rapids area theaters over the weekend with just 225 tickets sold for the R-rated thriller.

The movie that was shot in Grand Rapids over 16 days in September 2008 stars Val Kilmer and Armand Assante, and some noticeable Grand Rapids landmarks like the Amway Grand Plaza, the Van Andel Museum Center, the Grand Rapids Police Department, the Bull’s Head Tavern, and the Grand Rapids Press.

In an earlier press release, we were told that the movie would be out on DVD in June… but now it looks like it will be closer to an August release. June is just around the corner and “Chaos” has not posted for release on any of the major DVD release websites. Amazon.com has the release date as August 4th. But, a spokesperson at Genius Products tells me “we haven’t officially announced the DVD street date, but I can tell you that if it were in June we would have already announced it”.

I’ll keep you posted!!

Its great to see Grand Rapids and its local talent looking so good on the big screen. There were numerous spatterings of applause and cheers during the premiere of “The Chaos Experiment”, a movie that shot in Grand Rapids for 16 days in September 2008, the first since Michigan’s generous tax incentives were passed.

Too bad the applause and cheers were limited to noticing local landmarks like the Amway Grand Plaza Hotel, the Grand Rapids Police Department, the carousel at the Van Andel Museum Center, the Bull’s Head Restaurant, the Grand Rapids Press and local actors (like Doug Alchin and Michael Travis) getting their few minutes of screentime and delivering their handful of lines… because the movie itself hovers around average. Anyone who wasn’t involved or isn’t somehow connected to Grand Rapids, or a fan of Val Kilmer should wait on seeing this movie.

Warning to parents: this movie is rated R for its violence, nudity, and language.

Its sad to say, but this movie had the potential to be so much better, in the end its appeal will be limited to Grand Rapidians, the people involved with or interested in this project, and die hard Kilmer and Armand Assante fans.

Director Philippe Martinez told us on set that this was going to be a Hitchcock-like thiller, but somewhere along the way, it lost its connection to the famed director that set up many of our modern suspense thrillers.

The pacing is off… the violence is more graphic than implied… the movie drifts in and out of being serious… the plot doesn’t have a building climax that gets more and more intense… and I was never on the edge of my seat. I cringed a couple times at the violence, but not from suspense.

This is the second time in less than a year I’ve said this, but this movie felt like a director’s cut… you know, when you’ve seen a movie and loved it, and get to see the slightly longer versions of scenes or different scenes than you saw before. But this is the opposite… here a vasy majority of scenes needed to be tightened up, moving to the next scene and move the story along.

I can appreciate the dark, twisted nature of the movie, and the cinematography was good, with a eerie and ominous mix of music weaved through the film. I like the fact that the first two minutes or so of the movie has no dialogue and that the scenes in the steam bath used a lot of close-ups to convey emotions, while the outside scenes used a lot of wider shots.

The six subjects inside the ’steam bath’, a set constructed at a soundstage in Grand Rapids are: Eric Roberts, Megan Brown, Patrick Muldoon, Cordelia Reynolds, Eve Mauro, and Quinn Duffy.

The movie’s flashes between Kilmer and Assante’s tense interrogation and the subjects in the steam bath tied to establish pacing, but this is one case when more would have been better. If Kilmer would have explained each stage of the ’steam experiment’, then cut to the ’subjects’ going through his theory, it wouldn’t have been so scattered. That change would stengthen his theory that in this enclosed, warming environment, people will begin to de-evolve into basic instincts of survival while others go crazy. Its implied and later referenced, but too late in the film.

Kilmer carries this movie with his portrayal of a crazy, delusional scientist with theories that are radically beyond the believable. His moments without dialogue or limited lines are strong as he conveys lines of screenplay without opening his mouth. When he does, he’s often quick witted and intelligent compared to Assante’s character of the bruting police detective. Assante’s acting is polished and solid, with the audience easily sold that he is a transplanted policeman from New York. He’s got a sense of humor, he’s tough, and a ladies man all in one movie.

Unfortunately the strength of Kilmer and Assante’s scenes are not enough to lift this movie’s rating up.

Michigan actors Doug Alchin and Michael Travis should be happy with their performances in their first big movie. Alchin, from Okemos, Michigan plays Assante’s Lt. Clark at the Grand Rapids Police Department, delivering several convincing lines of dialougue as Assante’s antagonist in a couple scenes. Travis, from Grand Rapids, Michigan plays Sam, a security guard, at a hotel, sharing screen time with both Kilmer and Assante and despite just a few lines, he holds his own with the two pros in the one scene he’s in.

THE BOTTOM LINE:

I really wanted this movie to be better and it could have… but it wasn’t. “Chaos”’s liberal editing pulled the rug out from under any climatic tension that was built up in a scene… making this more of a slasher mystery and less of a suspense thriller… and leaving the audience just to wait and see who dies next and how. Sure there’s a few twists, but not enough to pay off the audience’s patience to the end. I give it 6.0 out of 10 … but I look forward to Martinez’ next project… and I hope its bigger budget helps.

Update: Congratulations to the 2 winners… they have been contacted by email, but if they are unable to pick up their tickets, I have picked 2 alternates. Thanks to everyone who entered!!!

Update: I picked up the tickets yesterday for the premiere Tuesday evening, May 5th, but I only have 2 pairs of tickets to give away, so get your comments in and make ‘em count! I’ll pick the 2 winners and notify them by email on Monday!!

Contest to see “The Chaos Experiment” before it opens in Grand Rapids

I will have a limited amount of tickets to giveaway for the May 5th premiere of “The Chaos Experiment” at Celebration! Cinema North… so here’s the contest, its easy: just leave a quality comment on any of my blogs (old or new)… and when you do, include your name and email address in the comment section, so I can contact you. The person with the most quality comments wins!

Some additional details about the May 5th invitation-only premiere:
My source tells me that the premiere for “The Chaos Experiment” will not include any celebrities, like the main cast, but there will be a representative from the company.

My source also says that Celebration! Cinema worked to get the movie to have a theatrical run in Grand Rapids, since it was filmed here. Apparently the costs were too high to release the movie in other cities, and the market is better for DVD.

After the premiere, “The Chaos Experiment” will be available for one week for the public starting May 8th at Celebration! Cinema North and Celebration! Cinema RiverTown. The weeklong run from May 8th to 14th will include limited screenings at least twice a day.

The movie is reportedly being executive produced by Robert De Niro and written/directed by Barry Primus.

“20% Fiction” is apparently in the pre-production stage and expected to shoot in Troy sometime this year.

The comedy/drama is about a high profile respected acting coach fed-up with the pace of the biz in Southern California and decides to move to a small town where he finds love and self-fulfillment after working with the small town’s quirky residents.

Kilmer was in Grand Rapids in September 2008 for “The Steam Experiment”.

Poster and New Photos from the set of “The Steam Experiment”, now in post-production

Its been awhile since I’ve had an update on the first movie I’ll be able to follow from its rumors, to announcement, to shooting in Grand Rapids, to a chance to go on-set, to the eventual release of the film.

So here they are, the poster and new photos for the suspense/thriller “The Steam Experiment” from the production company (Cinepro Pictures).

The photos show Val Kilmer in his role as “Jimmy” who takes his ridiculed theories on global warming to a deadly extreme, creating “The Steam Experiment” – and turning up the heat on his subjects.

Most of the photos are from on the set inside the turkish bath shot on set at Deano’s in Grand Rapids… with Eve Mauro, Patrick Muldoon, Quinn Duffy and Megan Brown. Eric Roberts and Cordelia Reynolds (not pictured) are also Jimmy’s unsuspecting victims.

Steam Experiment expanded synopsis:

Since his decline into delusion and madness after professional disgrace, Professor Raymond Fowler (Val Kilmer) has been a patient at the Northrock Mental Institution in Grand Rapids, Michigan.

Desperate to prove his ridiculed work as valid and impending truth, Fowler conjures a macabre plan: Under the guise of the his alter ego, James Pettis, Fowler creates the ruse of the Annabelle Dating Service and lures six unwitting participants to be the subjects of The Steam Experiment.

His hypothesis: By 2012, the effects of global warming will heat the planet so drastically that major natural disasters and temperatures of 130 degrees during the winter will cause an immediate and drastic degradation of civilization into aggression and chaos. A published author and former university professor, Pettis received ridicule and ostracism by his academic colleagues for his outlandish claims.

The Experiment: Determined to prove the validity of his hypothesis, Fowler creates a microcosm of the impending civil devolution by locking six human beings in an increasingly hot steam room. This controlled environment, monitored by hidden cameras, affords him the opportunity to analyze the effects of the rising heat and restricted movement of his subjects. He predicts that his subjects will regress into a primal survival mode, turning upon one another and destroying themselves, acting as models for the behavior of the greater community under the duress of significant climate change.

10/10/08 11:09am: MORE UPDATES TODAY INVOLVING “THE STEAM EXPERIMENT”

Even more updates since I went to sleep… my email inbox is loaded with updates… like comments from the producer about working in Grand Rapids and a reference to the deadly plot, plus an update from the West Michigan Film Office on a possible release date….

FROM THE WEST MICHIGAN FILM OFFICE:

“Unsure when Steam will be released, could be a soon as January, but the prediction is for next spring or fall. Good news, they liked filming here and they have referenced other feature films to be done here.” - Rick Hert, Executive Director of the West Michigan Film Office

FROM THE PRODUCER:

Some highlights from Producer Luc Campeau’s wrap report after the final day of shooting:

“The STEAM ROOM IS COMPLETE!!! We are out of the STEAM!!!! You will have to see the movie to know if they all die.”

“For the ones that were skeptical that it can be done in 16 Days… and within a City Block….Here it is..Done!!!”

“We were the First shoot in Grand Rapids, Michigan, under the new State incentive. It was hard to crew but we successfully paved the way for others. Grand Rapids is a great City, with great people, a good number of good crew and great potential to host other movies like this one”

- – - -

10/10/08 2:44am: UPDATES FROM BEHIND THE SCENES OF “THE STEAM EXPERIMENT”

Two weeks ago, filming wrapped on “The Steam Experiment” but details from the project continue to trickle in…. like word of how much money was spent in Michigan, an agreement to having a local premiere for the movie and insight on how the stunts went during the production….

FROM THE STUNTMAN:

Over email, Steve Hart, the stunt coordinator for the movie says he’s back in Los Angeles and waiting for his next project: the new season of Reno 911.

He tells me that the stunt work went well on “The Steam Experiment”, he enjoyed working with Val Kilmer and Armand Assante, and that the movie’s director and producer both hinted at future projects in Grand Rapids.

Here’s some of my email exchange with Steve Hart: “The Steam experiment went very well from my perspective, but mine is a narrow perspective. I thought that the crew and cast were on par with any that I have worked with.

Val and Armand were excellent to work with, but again, my work with them and conversations were limited. Philippe and Luc seemed to like Grand Rapids a lot and even spoke of doing something there in the future.”

Steve adds: “My portion of it was intense because of the action, the lack of clothing, the time constraints and the fact that stunt doubles could not be used. It is always difficult to do these type of scenes on any

set, but when you add the time of day, The crew and cast get tired and accidents can happen. Fortunately no one was even scratched.”

Thanks Steve!

.

FROM THE WEST MICHIGAN FILM OFFICE:

Rick Hert, the Executive Director of the West Michigan Film Office is the man who helped answer questions before the crew arrived in Grand Rapids and solved their problems while they were here has since met with the producers after the shooting wrapped….

and he’s working to try to get a little more West Michigan exposure through “The Steam Experiment” …. two of the things the producers have agreed to is a LOCAL PREMIERE and to give the West Michigan

Film Office a mention in the credits to help build the office’s reputation amoung the movie making community.

.

FROM THE ASSOCIATED PRESS:

In a story that hit the wires Thursday, “Steam Experiment” Executive Producer Karinne Behr said that $3 million of the movie’s $7 million budget was spent in Michigan. And in referring to those now nationally known tax incentives of up to 42%, Behr said that the decision to film in Michigan instead of Florida “was purely financial”. “Michigan’s incentives are definitely the strongest. Hopefully that will be a great success story for the state. It’s better to spend the money here than overseas”, Behr added.

The Story (from an official release):

Six people find themselves trapped and terrorized in an urban turkish bathhouse in a Hitchcockian suspense-thriller directed by Philippe Martinez. The story begins when former university professor James Pettis (VAL KILMER) boasts to the local paper that he has trapped six people and is holding them hostage in a Turkish bath to prove his hypothesis that humans will devolve into chaos under the pressures of global warming. Detective Jack Mancini (ARMAND ASSANTE) is brought in to interrogate Pettis who offers to reveal the hostages’ location if his hypothesis is printed as the next day’s front page headline. The six potential victims are: an ex-professional football player (ERIC ROBERTS), a former actress (MEGAN BROWN), a nurse (PATRICK MULDOON), a waitress (EVE MAURO), a restauranteur (QUINN DUFFY), and a writer (Cordelia Reynolds). As temperatures rise to horrifying levels, the six desperate detainees fight to survive against impossible odds.

What the Director, Philippe Martinez is saying:

“I’ve always been fascinated with Alfred Hitchcock’s suspense thrillers and the atmosphere of his films. We have a superb ensemble cast, a strong script, and it will be an interesting journey into the darkness of human nature when confronted with a crisis situation.”

How this all started, for me:

“The Steam Experiment” has been in the works for months… and for about 4 weeks, I’ve been waiting to report this news: Val Kilmer is the name that started this whole search for clues

I know that Producers have been scouting various locations around Grand Rapids for months

Some of those locations include the Amway Grand Plaza Hotel, The Grand Rapids Press downtown office, some street scenes, a Grand Rapids bar, one of the bridges, and sets built in a soundstage in Grand Rapids The Production Company Cinepro Pictures is based in Largo, Florida, and the stort was originally written to be located in Tampa, Florida and has been re-written to be based in Grand Rapids Armand Assante, Eric Roberts, and Patrick Muldoon also star

So far there are no plans to put out a call for “extras”, because local actors and actresses and people working at the location shoots have filled out the cast

You may remember a previous mention of Armand Assante – he’s set to star in another movie that was scheduled to film in West Michigan – “The Fifth Mafia”, but is now not coming to Grand Rapids

How this all started, for me:

“The Steam Experiment” has been in the works for months… and for about 4 weeks, I’ve been waiting to report this news:

Val Kilmer is the name that started this whole search for clues

I know that Producers have been scouting various locations around Grand Rapids for months

Some of those locations include the Amway Grand Plaza Hotel, The Grand Rapids Press downtown office, some street scenes, a Grand Rapids bar, one of the bridges, and sets built in a soundstage in Grand Rapids

The Production Company Cinepro Pictures is based in Largo, Florida, and the stort was originally written to be located in Tampa, Florida and has been re-written to be based in Grand Rapids

Armand Assante, Eric Roberts, and Patrick Muldoon also star

So far there are no plans to put out a call for “extras”, because local actors and actresses and people working at the location shoots have filled out the cast

You may remember a previous mention of Armand Assante – he’s set to star in another movie that was scheduled to film in West Michigan – “The Fifth Mafia”, but is now not coming to Grand Rapids

9/7/08 UPDATE: Tonight, “The Steam Experiment” will be in the 4th night of shooting… again, most of the shooting will be indoors and at night at numerous locations around Grand Rapids… with closed sets.

After 3 days of shooting, the filmmakers are on target right now and the West Michigan Film Office says “they (production crew) are doing well and the community is helping to make the production a success… On behalf of our community, we have been able to answer every question and fufill all of the needs… with local businesses.”

9/6/08 Filming underway: Shooting started Friday (9/5) and continued through the weekend, but most of the shooting will be indoors in areas off limit to the general public… there’s also no current call for “extras”… stay tuned.

“The Steam Experiment” setting up at the Amway Grand Plaza Hotel

9/4/08: BIG UPDATE TODAY:

In a release from PR for the Amway Grand Plaza Hotel, the Hotel “will be the headquarter hotel for the production team of “The Steam Experiment”.”

The Press Release also says that the Production Company, based in Florida “Cinepro Pictures Studios” will be filming in various locations that include the Amway Grand Plaza itself.

The release says.. “The crew is currently constructing sets inside the hotel and will feature a ballroom, lobby and the Pantlind’s majestic exterior. According to the script, the property has been dubbed “The Grand Hotel” in recognition of our site.”

But you won’t be able to see those scenes being shot, because, again from the release… “During production, only hotel guests and restaurant patrons will be permitted on the premises. However, all sets will be closed to the public and media unless otherwise authorized by Cinepro Pictures.”

More updates about cast and plot coming later today as well !!!

I’m hearing that there won’t be a massive call for extras… that local actors and actresses have rounded out the cast!!!

Here we go.. spotlight Grand Rapids… its movie time!!!

last entry: September 2, 2008:

Who could it be now? The rumors are running wild… we do know that a big movie project is coming to Grand Rapids.

What a crazy day… after rumors were swirling around town and the newsroom, Rachael Ruiz called me before my shift to ask me about the movie project rumors I’ve been sitting on for about 3 weeks.

As I’ve told my managers, we have to be careful about these things, because movie projects can fall apart so fast… just like Samuel L. Jackson’s “Unthinkable” quickly pulled out as their production demands were too much to ask for when the shooting was just weeks away.

So between Rachael and I, we were able to piece a story together (more pre-production details here).

This is the biggest project yet, its happening and its very real… and very cool!!

And tonight, after talking to the Publicist, he confirms that “The Steam Experiment” is coming to Michigan and will start to shoot in the next week… there is speculation (*nothing confirmed yet*) that Val Kilmer will star, and we are hoping to be able to confirm *that* casting news by the end of the week!

More and More Michigan Movies

Posted on Wednesday, August 13, 2008 at 5:45 pm by Aaron Lafferty
The people working at the offices of the West Michigan Film Office, Grand Rapids Film Office and the Michigan Film Office are really busy these days…

AND THERE’S ANOTHER BIG NAME ACTOR THAT COULD BE COMING TO FILM IN GRAND RAPIDS….

The West Michigan Film Office says as of today, they have more than 23 projects in various stages of development that are interested in West Michigan, some are small budget projects or college movies, others are bigger like “The Fifth Mafia” and Samuel L. Jackson’s “Unthinkable”.

Rick Hert at the West Michigan Film Office says that number of 23 projects grows on a daily basis.

As for Samuel L. Jackson’s “Unthinkable”… Grand Rapids Public Schools says its still negotiating on the possible lease of Iroquois Middle School. The West Michigan Film Office says they have been sending the Production Company working on the project location options for other shoots they might need for the movie. That production company is also still working on its application for filming with the Michigan Film Office.

“The Fifth Mafia” is currently delayed in their production and hope to be here before “the weather changes”.

Another big name coming?

I’m also working on rumors that another big name actor is coming to film a movie in West Michigan… I’ve been in touch with the people behind the scenes who tell me they are still working out contracts and other details before the announcement can be made and before the movie actually comes to shoot here.

I’ll have that as soon as we can release that information. :)
